Live-in vs. Live-Out Nanny?

Hi! We live in central London and due to the imminent arrival of number 2 are about to move house. We know that 6 months down the track we are definately going to need a nanny to look after the newborn and 2y.o. DS.

SO the question is - would it be worth our while moving into a place (we have one in mind) which has a (fabulous) self-contained apartment on hte lower-ground floor (bedroom, kitchen/reception, showerroom) to plan for a live-in nanny? THe place is approx 100 pounds more a week than other places we are looking at - but would we save that in offering accommodation?

The nanny would be expected to work between 40 and 50 hours a week.

(hmmm... can anyone recommentis there a good book/website i can look at to see how much I should expect to be paying?)

It all depends on what sort of nanny you want really. For example i earn £400 a week nett and i get a flat with all bills paid but i have 12 years experience. If you employ a nanny with less experience or if English isn't their first language you'll be able to pay less say £300 a week. Depending on where you live in London a live out nanny will want £450 - £500 nett a week i would think. I'm sure some mums will be on here to tell me you can pay less as i'm sure you can. Live in salaries have really risen in the last 2 years but live out salaries haven't risen so much in my opinion. Self contained accom is always a bonus when advertising a job. Good luck .

Having an apartment available will certainly make the job more attractive to candidates, but it will also increase your bills - for example, your nanny would need a separate TV licence (it isn't required if nanny has a room within your home, but it is with a self-contained apartment even within the same building). Other things could also be separate, such as water. So worth investigating what the extra costs would be in total, not just the rent.

Some sites I use for looking at cost of nannies, are:
www.nannyjob.co.uk
www.greatcare.co.uk
www.gumtree.com
There is also an annual survey published by NannyTax (one of the nanny payroll companies) - figures for 2007
