Do you think EYFS will end childminding in it's current form?

I am wondering

Quite apart from my situation.

Registering as a food premises
Written risk assessments
Written observations
Fees going up
Paperwork coming out of your arse?

Or am I doom & gloom tonite

I mean if you have 2 children and just childmind 1 under 5 and maybe a couple of out of schoolies is it going to be worth the crap?

I agree with you, have thought it for a while now, x

KatyMac · 27/04/2008 22:10

I thought I was being unnecessarily miserable and gloomy

oh no, i did kinda know about the eyfs but hadnt looked in detail

crace · 28/04/2008 07:11

No Katy, it won't be worth it. I will only have 1 under 5 spot available, and one 5-8 once I return from leave and I am beginning to wonder myself if it's worth it.

shoshe · 28/04/2008 07:27

No think you are right, I have decided when my current contracts finish in August 2010, that will be my lot, all my mindees will be posted by then, will take one on in October which will be my last.

Like Katy my Health could be better, and with all the extra work on top, it is not worth it.

eleanorsmum · 28/04/2008 08:06

think this is how alot are feeling, me included! what's the point i wonder? am really assessing what to with work etc at mo. dd is off to school sept so could try a schooly job. i just don't know!

Pinkranger · 28/04/2008 08:27

i agree, my under 5 leaves in october as Mum is expecting again and i will be giving it up, i didnt want to do it for all the paper work!

crace · 28/04/2008 08:35

I am finding this really really sad actually - it's changed the nature of the job and frankly I would be operating at a loss plus a lot of stress on top of it. And the registration fee is just crazy.. ARGH!

Pinkranger · 28/04/2008 14:31

how much is the registration fee going to be then?

AdamAnt · 28/04/2008 14:34

Oh no - what's this about? I've just started to look into child-minding

Can anyone give me a link?

chel86 · 28/04/2008 16:26

I'm with you guys.

Although I will continue to cm, because that has always been the plan until dd goes to school anyway and will then think about pursuing my career again in my love of legal work, it will be alot more hassle with all the paperwork.

I think parents choose cm's because they are a home-from-home based childcare. You don't see parents doing written observations of their own kids, marking them against charts and planning activities to enhance particular skills/interests! I would be interested to see what parents of mindees think of the whole EYFS and what cm's will be expected to do while looking after their child. It won't be the same

ellingwoman · 28/04/2008 16:45

How awful it will be in the future if the only care available to pre-schoolers was institution-based.

The government need to re-think this. Is there a child-minders body like a union or something where your collective voice can be heard?

southernbelle77 · 28/04/2008 17:25

The NCMA are trying to stop the increased registration fees but don't think that anyone is appealing against the EYFS and all the extra work that entails.

Pinkranger · 28/04/2008 17:31

When i spoke to my mindees mum about it all she couldn't believe it! She is a Teacher so has alot to do with Ofstead, she thinks its all a load of rubbish and as someone said that is why she chose a CM so they could be cared for like he was at home!

Booh · 28/04/2008 19:22

I really don't think that the EYFS will last much past a year or so. So many CM's have already stopped, lots are stopping in September.........and after talking to an Ofsted inspector, she is giving up in September too as it is all too much!

southernbelle77 · 28/04/2008 19:38

So, when EYFS does come in, what does it mean if we don't do all the observations etc etc that they will require? Will we just get a worse ofsted report? I am still quite naive about the whole thing and don't have my EYFS course until July!
What worries me more at the moment (while still in a state of naivity!) is the increased registration fees and if I will really be able to afford them.

busymum1 · 28/04/2008 19:48

I am a network childminder and have been doing all of this for 2 years honestly its not as bad as it sounds wish I could show you how I do mine as I have an easy system in place which takes about 10-20 mins a day and meets all eyfs requirements think if we could pool resources it would be good idea

thebumcleaner · 28/04/2008 20:11

I was reading the EYFS bumf the other night, and they are starting to blur the lines on the ages as well that you have. Children are now "younger" until sept 1st after their 5th birthday, and you will be able to care for 3 "younger" children. The rising 5's will count when they start school I think, but you will have to inform Ofsted. From what I have read, then it will be a sort of grey area again as it just says that they are counted when you have them before and after school. So what about holidays - what age are they then?

KatyMac · 28/04/2008 20:13

I know what you are saying Busymum & I agree - but that won't stop OFSTED de-registering me tbh

busymum1 · 28/04/2008 20:31

KatyMac where is paragraph in eyfs regarding your situation wanted to reread it

KatyMac · 28/04/2008 20:48

It's not in EYFS (which only mentions not more than 3 childminders working together)

But in "Registration of childcare providers from September 2008" which is NOT on the OFSTED website (but I obtained a copy & can email it)

Which says"But if you provide childcare or work with three or more people on domestic premises after 1 September 2008 then the Childcare Act says that you are either an early or later years childcare provider or both: you are not a childminder. "

OFSTED are apparently writing new standards for us - but who knows when they will turn up
