Child maintenance

Hiya I’ve been declaring my sons dads child maintenance he gives me to universal credits every month for the last almost 2 years as “ other income” now just done a quick google and it says that it doesn’t need to be declared as it’s not a taxable income
so I’ve been deducted £450 a month from universal credits when I shouldn’t of
is this correct?
if so will I get that money back from universal credits in back payment
as that’s a lot of money I would of missed out from them

also they contacted me via journal 10 minutes before they closed stating in August they overpaid me £270 due to being paid £890 from my “employer” which is incorrect as I’m my nans carer and only get £100 a month from that so now their offices aren’t open until Monday so I have to dwell and think about all this over the weekend

i have a work focused interview with them on Wednesday so I will discuss it with them if it’s not sorted by then

sorry it’s a long one thank you x

I think you can ask them if they'll pay it back? But since you declared it they may well not agree, at least in total. Definitely stop declaring it now! :)

Ask for proof of where that £890 came from. If you're sure you didn't earn it from anywhere then you can argue that! I'd do that in person on Wednesday. Good luck!

Thank you so much I’m printing out all my bank statements and bringing them with me to discuss it with them!
if they back dated all my child maintenance Ive been declaring I’d be due 10k+ but definitely don’t see that happening lol xx

Sounds tough op. I think you've posted in the wrong bit though:

I doubt theyll back date it as it was your mistake.
The overpayment could be because you were paid twice in one assessment period. You just have to put a message in the journal when it happens and they reallocate it to the correct assessment period.

How come you were declaring maintenance from your DCs dad when they never ask for that information? They deduct you £450 based on the maintenance or your earnings from work also?

LikeARunnerHo · 08/11/2024 21:42

I also think you should post on one of the UC groups on FB

Because when I applied for UC they told me I need to declare all incoming money into my account so I stupidly assumed that meant child maintenance too
so they’ve been deducting me £450 a month which is what I get from my sons dad
and I earn £100 a month from caring for my nan x
