"The law states that where more than three persons at any time provide or assist in the provision of childcare on domestic premises, then it is no longer childminding.

This means that both the options you have listed in your query would trigger a change in registration from childminder to childcare provider on domestic premises.

If the provision is made up of more than three persons, even if they don't all work together on the same day(s), then you will no longer be acting as a childminder but as childcare on domestic premises.

It would be possible to be registered as a childminder and also be a staff member of an early or later years provision, for example a childminder works in her own home or other domestic premises from Monday to Wednesday and works part-time on Thursday and Friday as an assistant in a nursery class."

So now I am a "childcare provider on domestic premises" wtf is that? - how many parents would take their child to that? Couldn't they have at least given us a sodding name?

How do I protest this?

Hmmm that sounds about right to me.

Can you not just call yourselves a Childminding Group?

In many ways, childminders are childcare providers on domestic premises which- I think- is something to celebrate really

KatyMac · 23/04/2008 20:31

but we are not allowed to call ourselves childminders if we aren't

& god alone knows what the new 'rules' for this will be

I want to be a childminder
I have been a childminder for 5 years
I don't want to stop being a childminder

Don't worry katym I think it's just a term for OFSTED use- I would still call yourself a CM (same as I am a "daycare provider" but call myself a nursery owner)

KatyMac · 23/04/2008 22:04

over here?

oh. My childminder must be a childcarer on domestic premises then.

I had no idea/don't really care. She's bloody good!

KatyMac · 23/04/2008 22:10

Yurt - is there one of her? or do lots work together?

looneytune · 23/04/2008 22:20

Katymac - do you remember I got the story sorted out on the BBC local news and it also reached newspaper too? I know my BBC contact is for London but maybe you could just call the newsroom in your area and see if they want to run a story - it's crazy!!! So sorry you're having to go through all this

KatyMac · 23/04/2008 22:22

Thanks LT

oh she might just have 3 in total (assistants). I read it as more than 3 children initially

I don't think it would make any difference to me (as a parent) though.

KatyMac · 24/04/2008 07:29

Yurt - tell her to get in touch with me

As there are 4 of them this will affect her

OFSTED have been keeping it quiet so we cannot complain

After my own hassles with OFSTED, I'm not surprised you are annoyed Katy.
IMO, OFSTED are trying to turn CM's into nurseries, they want us all to stop completely, which would make their job a lot easier. The paperwork and other things that CMs have to do now, and all the rules and regualtions, is it any wonder CMs are giving up in droves?
I would get onto teh BBC about this, this (and other issues) are bound to affect CMs all over the UK.

saltire · 24/04/2008 07:40

Sorry - that should read
"it's bound to affect CMs all over England", as if they move to Scotland Wales or NI, then they will have to re-register!

shoshe · 24/04/2008 07:51

Saltire I'm giving up before we move back to Scotland, after what by then will be over 30 yeasr in Childcare, I am not doing the bloody training again!

saltire · 24/04/2008 07:55

Check with the Care Commission though Shoshe. There was talk of them setting something up for people who have minded in other parts of the Uk to be able to have a faster registration system.
I don't know if it ever got set up though.
Funny how some places are willing to do that, yet others aren't

yurt1 · 24/04/2008 08:25

I think I counted wrong. I think there are 3 maximum (usually 2) so it won't apply.

It wouldn't worry me as a parent.

Berryred · 02/06/2008 19:40

shoshe, I moved from Kinloss to bedford and got re-reg fairly quickly apart from having to do the 6 week ICP course again

But they have kept my reg on hold so if I move back to scotland they can do it double time hth

ThePrisoner · 02/06/2008 19:55

Hmm, I'm wondering if Ofsted will contact people like me - I am a solo childminder, but have my dh and 3 dds all registered as assistants. They are only there for occasional emergencies, or my dds sometimes help out during uni holidays if I have an extra child. They are named as assistants on all my offical paperwork.

I could, potentially, have each of them working one day a week with me ... I shall await a letter then ...

KatyMac · 02/06/2008 22:27

S'OK TP - it's all sorted now

OFSTED have backed down / changed their minds decided that 3 at a time is OK and that we are still lovely & can carry on childminding

OP posts:
ThePrisoner · 03/06/2008 01:46

And since when have Ofsted been consistent in anything?! I bet if I rang and asked them, they'd give a different reply!!
