Does anyone know how many families a nanny can nanny for?

as many as she wants

nannyL · 19/04/2008 22:35

sorry that doesn sound overly helpful...

ultimately it can be as many families that suits the nanny...

many nannies do nanny shares, but i dont know that many nannies who prefer them to a full time job with 1 family

IMO the fewer families the better and one is the optimum

however there is no reason why the nanny could do a different family every day of the week, if she really wanetd to and it suited her etc

frannikin · 20/04/2008 00:43

In a share a nanny can have up to 2 - so that's children from 2 different families at the same time. 3 or more and OFSTED will require her to register as a CM.

If it's separate PT jobs then as many as she likes providing she has separate contracts will all of them. So family 1 have a contract with nanny for mondays, family 2 have a contract with nanny for tuesdays, family 3 have a contract with nanny for wednesdays etc rather than families 1, 2 and 3 having a joint contract with nanny for mon-weds care.

I hope that makes sense...

You can be a self empoloyed nanny and do ad hoc work - that way you can work for as many famiies as you like.

nannyL · 20/04/2008 09:27

true phraed but your hours must be different...

or at least not tbe the same hours for the same family for more than 6 months...

if you do the same hours for more than 6 months then the family have to employ you (as an employer) for whatevere hours they hapen to be

imananny · 20/04/2008 10:59

think franikin and nannyl have covered the points i was going to make, yes as many famillies as like if only them that day and not more than 2 if nannyshare, and again if working for the family for more than 6mths, the job is not a temp one, therefore nanny cant be se.

I would say that if a nanny did 5 seperate jobs, then each employer will end up paying a higher rate of tax for them, and you can spilt your tax code 5 ways

why do you ask abc?

nannynick · 20/04/2008 11:13

I would not suggest splitting tax code. Can be easier all round if one job is Primary (so using tax free allowance) and all others are Secondary (so at basic rate tax).

I've heard this 6 month rule being mentioned... can anyone provide a link to an official document which contains it? SE criteria to my knowledge is far more than a 6 month rule, it's more the general picture that gets built and part of that involves how much control the person you are working for has. See IR56

imananny · 20/04/2008 11:28

i have had a look nick but cant seem to find a link

i think i saw it on a tax office website when i was se a few years ago

might be worth ringing up a tax office and asking them to send you a leaflet, but i have def seen it in writing somewhere

not much help, sorry

nannyL · 20/04/2008 13:02

no links but i know maternity nannies (who are often self-employed as they do a few weeks at a time in each job) have problems staying in a job over the 6th months mark cause it means the family have to be there employers
