is there anyone out there that just looks after school aged kids and if so do they earn a living?

I know of 2 CM's who do it, they charge £5 per hour before school and £15 after (til 6pm) and they charge more for a hot meal.

One of them must do very well as she picks up between 7 and 10 children every day!

The other one only does before and after school care and overnight care and says she doesn't need to work in the day

I suppose the 'downside' is school holidays when you are either inundated with children (normally as school) or have no work at all -say parents who request term time only

I charge a minimum of £10 for before and after school so one child could potentially earn me £100 per week. If I could get at least 3 of these I would definitely only have before/after schoolies.
BTW I give all my before/after schoolies term time only contracts and say that dates in the school holidays are to be booked on a mutually agreed basis and first come first served as I will only take on as many mindees as I have room in my car so we are not house bound. I live in middle of nowhere with no park etc around us. I also ensure that at least one day a week in the holidays I give myself an easy day with maybe just ds and the baby I look after.

Sorry OFSTEDoutstanding I'm being nosy here
Do you charge £10 per hour before and after school or just £10 for each?
I'm asking because I don't do school pickups but I'm quite tempted to start as my friend (mentioned above) makes such a good wage from it and it has to be easier than 4 under 5's ain the day which I currently do

OFSTEDoutstanding · 18/04/2008 22:33

For before schoolies I charge £10 from 7.30am-drop off at school this is £10 total not per hour my hourly rate is £3.30 so if I charged per hour it wouldn't be worth doing especially as I drive to schools as spread around my area. After school is the same £10 total not per hour from 3.30pm-6pm as once agian £3.30 per hour is not worth doing when you factor in activity runs and feeding etc.
In the holidays the mindees pay £3.30 per hour unless they are with me less than 3 hours per day in which case they pay £10 for the 3 hourly session.
Hope that makes sense!!

Its not possible to earn a wage from school age children here - the after school and holiday clubs are so cheap childminders can't afford to run at those prices. In the holidays there are lots of sports and clubs here that are much cheaper than I can afford to run at. Also, few people require care all week, most people want a couple of mornings or 1-3 evenings term-time and only odd weeks in the holidays.

In summer people share out the weeks between parents, grandparents and other relatives and may only need care for a week or 2 at most.

While there are parents who will still prefer to come to me (as the after school club doesn't do dinners, take to clubs/activities, homework support/is too noisy) its not enough for me to earn a living without the littlies.

Yes OFSTEDoutstanding, that makes sense thank-you . It might be worth me considering it.

ayla99 - that's a shame for you about the after school and holiday clubs, round here we are desperate for childminders who do pick ups cos we are all full and never a day goes by when someone doesn't ask me if I have any vacancies (I don't do pick ups), also we don't have any after school clubs and there are 4 schools local to me!

i prefer minding under 5's - i have some school aged mindees but they started as under 5's {iyswim} so they're ok!!
i just like the little one's best!

plus i hate school runs.
