Who regulates nurseries? Where do we go to raise a concern?

We are at a private nursery in London. For months the food quality has been slipping with the children are only getting basic meals like porridge in the afternoon, all whilst the owners have been profiteering from the government scheme and have increased the price. Worse, some of the children are getting injured in the room because we suspect they are under-resourced and not meeting ratios. A few of us have put complaints in writing by email.

The nursery manager responded sarcastically but the Nursery owners have not. I also emailed Ofsted six weeks ago and got no response. What do we do in terms of raising this? Is there such a thing as a Local Authority liaison officer? How is there no checks and balances? Hopefully a former nursery worker might see this and help us!

Contact Ofsted again…and find another nursery.

Sure but is Ofsted the right body? As we never got any kind of reply right weeks ago.

The nursery's complaints procedure should be on their website. Follow it to the letter. In the meantime you could try contacting the LADO - search for your local authority name and LADO (e.g. Hounslow LADO) and you should get the contact info.

I would start by removing your child asap if you can see signs of trouble, rather than wait for something to happen..

Is the porridge a meal or an afternoon tea/snack between lunch and dinner at home?

My 26 year old daughter still remembers and speaks very fondly of having porridge or yoghurt/stewed apples as a mid afternoon snack at nursery.

Not dismissing your concerns however I do think you need to understand that the costs of food is huge and not all nurseries will be making huge profits with huge jumps in costs of utilities, rents and wages. As for the funding it's been underfunded for years.

Ofsted look at all complaints received. If nothing has improved then contact them again.

Nurseries are not earning more from the extended funding where do you get that idea from?
Ask for the nursery complaints procedure and follow it to the letter yes Ofsted are the regulators
