hi

can anyone please let me have the difference between the normal and enhanced crb checks. what they actually check for?

reason i ask if a close friend is going back to work and her sister is having baby. shes in process of doing child minding course to be able to be paid through chilcare vouchers. however, sis partner is a ex addict with previous convictions etc, and currently on a controlled medication - will they allow her to become a cm with him in the house.

thanks for any help you can give me.
thanks

Each situation is different but I presume that she would have to prove the medication is out of children's reach at all times etc etc.

If it's just your friend's baby that her sister is looking after could she not become an approved nanny and look after the baby at your friend's house, thereby removing her partner from the equation?

mysonsmummy · 14/04/2008 18:24

hi - thanks i think the fact she needs to be a cm is so to be paid with childcare vouchers. also as its long term and sis has kids it would need to be at sis house.

would the ofsted people 'know' about the drugs/b.friend - if no-one told them - would it show on crb iyswim.

they dont want to wait to go on course and then find out she cant be c/m anyway.

thanks for any answers.

You can be paid with vouchers if you're an approved nanny BUT not sure if it works with blood relatives?

Having said that if it doesn't work as a nanny with blood relatives it might not work as a CM either.

Childcare

Can I pay my relatives for looking after my child using my childcare account?

Childcare provided in the child?s own home will not qualify if the Childcare Provider is related to the child. Childcare provided by a relative away from the child?s home will qualify if the relative is also caring for unrelated children, as long as the Childcare provider is Registered or Approved.

Which Childcare Providers are Eligible?

Under the new rules, to be eligible, the childcare must be provided by a Registered or an Approved Childcare Provider.

Ignore what I said about becoming an approved nanny as she wouldn't be able to use childcare vouchers. As a CM she could only use childcare vouchers is she was also caring for unrelated children but that doesn't help with the original qurstion at all.

frannikin - can I request that you provide a link to the source when you post things... it's great that you do post them but having a link to the source helps to know things like who wrote it, date it was written etc.

HRMC IR115 (Oct 2007) leaflet is a good one to read, with regard to Childcare Vouchers.
~~ Begin Quote ~~
Childcare provided by relatives can be qualifying childcare in the following circumstances
~ the relative is a ?registered? or ?approved? childcare provider, and
~ the care is provided away from the child's own home, and
~ the care is provided to non-related children in addition to the related child or children.
~~ End Quote ~~

Levels of CRB Disclosure
You can find detailed information about the types of check done, here (CRB Website).

The Childminder Registration Guide (July 2007) published by Ofsted, is a good thing to read. It applies in England only.
Under CRB checks done on individuals resident at the premises, but not involved in childcare... it says they will check Social Services records, PoCA, List99 and spent convictions exempt from Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. They will also carry out any other checks they feel are necessary, such as contacting probation officer.

I would have thought that Ofsted will want to check out your sisters partner fairly closely. It could delay the application process quite a bit.

You can request, the question is may you. It was one of the voucher providers - seemed the most logical place to start.

takes grammar nazi hat off

imananny · 14/04/2008 19:44

this may be a silly question but

why cant you look after relatives children, and use childcare vouchers [puzzled]

surely it shouldnt make a difference as long as registered/aproved?

nick can you explain please? or anyone else?

regards to OP, I would assume that if ANYONE in the house came up with a bad crb, then you wouldnt be able to work fromthere, as MIGHT be a risk to the children

again,I could be wrong about that, but otherwise what is the point of having one?

or it is to let employers know about past history, and then THEY can decide whether to employ/use that person?

ie having a bad crb might not mean you wont ever get jobs if due to someone else in the house having a bad one iykwim

nannynick · 14/04/2008 19:57

franikin - ok then, may I request

imananny - I think the rules were introduced to stop parents from getting Government assistance when relatives are providing the childcare. I suppose 'them in charge' have decided that relatives have a family duty to help out with childcare.
Our current Government is also wanting there to be more Childcare Places - if a childminder registers only to care for 1 child, then that isn't helping a great deal towards the Governments targets.

mysonsmummy · 15/04/2008 11:34

thanks everyone.

i think my question is now when you have the crb check to do with child minding is it the enhanced one? if it is not what do they actually check on the normal one?

OP posts:
fiodyl · 15/04/2008 11:41

so when u register to become a childminder they check social services records- does this mean that someone whos been involved with ss for their own children wont b allowed to b a childminder?
