Live-in or live-out Nanny in SE London?.... How do I go about getting one?

DP and I have come to the conclusion that a live-in Nanny might be the best solution for our situation... or maybe a live-out one... or maybe a live-in... ...

obviously there have been no colclusions made!

We are in the process of selling our house and moving into a new place before our second child is born in late July (argh! Soooo last minute). DS will be 20 months at that point and we wanted to get a Nanny for 2 - 3 days a week to help with the newborn a bit, but mostly to look after DS and give him some proper attention. Am I right in thinking that a live-in nanny is a good option? I figure that the difference in price between live in nad out would be greater than the difference in renting a 4 bed instead of a 3 bedroom house. Or will I find it hard having someone else living with us?

Argh! I cant decide and it makes my head hurt! ANybody have any thoughts/experience?

Also - what sort of rate should I be paying? Very little cooking and cleaning (besides that which DS demands) is required and maybe a night or two a week of babsitting (although I think we have forgotten how to have a social life). I would be very flexible as to when they work and would be happy to take on a student or someone who has other part-time work (or should i be worried about doing this?)

I am so lost nad indecisive!! any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

I am a live - out nanny in South London and i would ask for £8 per hour. If you are looking for a live in nanny, they woldnt charge much less than that and you would have to ay for their board and keep 24/7.
You also have to be sure you want someone else living in your house!

You need to think seriously about if you could cope with someone else living in your home.
Having someone come to your home on a daily basis may be better, especially if you are only wanting 3 days per week.
Also think about future... will your requirement change in a year, 2 years, 3 years? While someone may be able to do 3 days per week now, if you needed childcare 5 days per week in a year or two's time, then that person may not be able to do it.

Costs, search the internet for job adverts... some will give details of cost. For example, www.nannyjob.co.uk will give nanny job listings from parents and agencies - and you can search based on live-in, live-out, part-time, full-time.

agree with nick, if you only need a nanny for 2/3 days, you dont really a live in nanny, as they will be around all the time, unless they find another nanny job as a live out nanny of the other days

I've nannied in S.E London for the last 8 years. I also think a live out nanny is your best option. I would recommend putting an ad in Simply Childcare. It's a list/magazine type 'thing' full of nannies looking for work and parents seeking childcare. Parents looking for nannies do have to pay a fee, I'm not sure how much, but it certainly isn't much. Bound to be cheaper than agencies! They will send you three editions and put your ad in these. I've found them to be really helpful and found my last job through them. I know they have a website and are based in Camberwell, so you could do a search to find the number. I did have it but not sure where it is now. Goodluck!
