Setting Up As A Childminder

Hey 👋🏻

I'm looking for all the advice I can get regarding setting up as a childminder, I've got so many questions I don't know where to start...

Firstly routines - I know everyone has a different routine, but I'd like to get a structure in place so I can plan our days accordingly. We'd have to do the morning and afternoon school run.

Also what is the child to adult ratio, I'd be setting up on my own, I've read that your own children are taken into account, so I would have my 2 year old daughter at home with me, as well as my 2 year old nephew. My 6 year old son will be at school every day, but I'm assuming he would still be taken into account. Would just like to know how many children I can look after at 1 time.

I've also been looking into OFSTED and would love it if anyone could let me know what happens at your home inspection and what paperwork you need etc.

I wouldn't be making meals, but I would be offering morning and afternoon snacks, fruit, yogurts etc.

Please also let me know if there's anything I've missed that you feel would be really useful.

Thank you for reading and I appreciate all the information that I can get 😊

Ratios-.3 under 5 (school age 4 year olds.can count as rising 5s) sonypu could take on one more.

Then the total is 6 under 8 years old so you could have 2 more after school children.

The under 5s rule is a bit more flexible but the 6 under 8 is hard and fast rule.

Be aware you cannot claim funding for family members including nephews so your family will lose out on 15 hours funding.

Have you taken steps to get registered? I did a course with my Local Authority. All of these things were covered in the course, plus a lot more.

You need quite a few things like paediatric first aid, insurance, criminal background check for all adults in the house, a medical report from your GP etc.

It sounds like you could really do with finding a course that will go through everything you need. Ratios and routines are just a small part of the set up process.

Hi! Exciting that you're becoming a childminder! 😊 For routines, create a flexible schedule around school runs and activities.
Regarding ratios, with your 2-year-old daughter and nephew, you can care for one more child under 5. Your 6-year-old counts towards your numbers after school.
For OFSTED inspections, focus on safety and necessary paperwork. Healthy snacks are great! Don’t forget insurance and training like pediatric first aid. Good luck! You've got this!

Following as becoming a childminder is something I’m toying with.

My DD is one, and I’ve decided to become a SAHP. I’ve been thinking of registering as a CM and having one other child (similar age or slightly older) part-time.

I’ve seen there’s funding available to have the checks done but how in-depth is the housing check etc? I.E. our garden is a massive work in progress but that part is fenced off/children won’t be left unsupervised out there.

What about qualifications? Or insurance?
