How to draw up a shortlist for nannies?

So my efforts to replace the Hungarian 'did a runner' nanny are not going so well.

I think I am going to have to place an ad in the local paper. Last time I did this 2 1/2 yrs ago, we were overwhelmed with (mainly rubbish) responses, yet luckily managed to get a great nanny.

Does anyone have any ideas on the best way to go about filtering applicants, before I draw up an interview shortlist?

Should I try to establish experience / qualifications / pay expectations on the phone (too time consuming), get people to post CVs (too off-putting?), or any other ideas?

Try and get them to email you a cv for you to browse then when on the phone ask what pay expectations, what activities they would do, ideas of discipline, etc - and try and whittle it down - where abouts are you?

First of all sorry you are hunting again.

Think you need to decide excalty what you need, so in advert put hours, live in/out,ages of children and maybe a rough salary or be prepared to go through lots of calls/emails.

Do you want a qualified/experienced nanny,if so again put that in ad.

You might not want an 18yr old straight from college.

In advert ask them to send you a cv via email, and please if you are NOT interested in them for whatever reason, please reply with a short email, saying job has been filled/they are not what you are looking for etc - nothing is worse then not receiving a reply.

If a person is serious about getting a job, then they should be happy to post you a cv - was puzzled by your comment as too off putting - off putting for you or for nanny to send you one? though email is much easier

Then make a shortlist of the ones you like - hopefully should be 4 or 5 and interview, if you like them, then check reference and ask back for 2nd interview

Good luck

Thanks Imananny - good idea, if I put loads of info in the advert it will help.

About saying posting a CV may be off-putting - I know it sounds weird, but last time, loads of people seemed to be put off by this - I don't know whether it is the hassle of posting it, or whether some people have the skills & experience, but don't have a CV prepared. Who knows!

We are off on holiday tomorrow, so I am going to put in an advert once we get back.

then they cant have been truely interested in a job - I have a cv always updated on my laptop to send out to people as I am also a free lance temp nanny.

Is it worth putting up adverts NOW before you goaway skiing on gumtree, netmums,NJ and ask for nannies to email cv and a short description about theirselves to you, and then when you come back from holiday you can have a look through

Just sets the ballrolling sooner - you can then set an away message on your email to reply to all emails saying, you are away and will reply on x date (when you are back )
