I have been in the UK for nearly two years now ans I have been working as a housemistress in a boarding school. I am ready on move and start nannying. I have been to a few agencies and registered. Some have been very helpful and friendly while some have been very ...stuck up and snobby because I have not nannied in a few years. What I would like to know is, would you theoretically hire someone like me? I am:
Nanny Trained,First Aid Qualified,Lifeguard Qualified,Hold multiple university degrees,
Am 28 years old, Well travelled, Well spoken, well mannered, Have experience with all ages from newborn to teens, Lots of references, Muck in attitude, am not a prepubescent bimpo who would flirt with the dad,and have lived in the real world.
Thanks

Yes, I would, so long as your salary expectations matched mine! You sound great to me, but I wonder if so far you have encountered people who think that nannying might be a stopgap until you find another housemistress post?

AussieLou · 28/03/2008 17:19

I ended up housemistressing because the nanny hiring person (best job title I could come up with) at the agency I registered with when I first arrived was on holidays so the boarding school person "poached" me. I have stated that I wish to nanny and nanny only.

how many university degrees do you hold, if you don't mind my asking.

PellMell · 28/03/2008 17:33

What sort of age children to you feel you work best with
You didn't really mention that you enjoy working with children and seem to be a bit angry.........your last sentence in your op is not very appropriate (you probably didn't literally mean pre-pubescent)
Experience is good but not essential.
I feel that a warm and friendly person is the first thing I look for.

Of course, as is often said on here...I can't possibly know what you are like from one post.
You might just be having one of those "pissed off" days. We all have them
Good luck securing some work

If you want to work in Belfast I will give you a job!

Do you want live in or live out?

AussieLou · 28/03/2008 17:48

Hi nametaken, I have a bacherlor degree in history and politics and a masters in Law.
Hi to you too PellMell. I am sorry that you thought I was being rude I did not mean to come across like that. It was meant as a joke.
I like working with all children, preferably 5 and under. I am not pissed off at all but you cant convey feeling into text sometimes. I was just curious to see whether it was me not having a nneb, nn or other English qualification that was holding me back. It was only one person in one agency that was "snobby".
Blueskythinker, thanks for the offer but I am not looking right now. I want to finish out the school year with my girls at school.

I thought the prepubescent comment was funny. I like a nanny with a sense of homour. But, you are way overqualified. Why do you want to be a nanny? I would happily have you look after my kids, but I'm sure I couldn't afford you.

moreJellothanJlo · 29/03/2008 10:26

I'd have you Lou, but we are skint so you probably wouldn't have us!

You say that you are 'Nanny Trained' - so if that was training in another country, surely you have some kind of evidence such as a certificate... which with the powers of the internet, it may be possible to find out what was covered on that course. You may find that training was actually better, than doing NVQ3/NNEB training in England.

One difficulty I find is that if you have to submit a CV, then if you include all your training, you can appear over qualified. To get around that, I have different CV's... the nanny one aims to avoid mentioning too much about irrelevant qualifications - my HND for example (I didn't continue it to make it a degree). The past is the past, the present is what is important. You should not lie, but you don't have to reveal the total truth either - it is up to an interviewer to establish what they want to know. The purpose of a CV is to get an interview. Once you have the interview, it is then down to how you and your potential employer relate, if you can answer all their questions to their satisfaction, and they in turn can answer yours.

In your case, the following are relevant:
Nanny Trained (I would suggest expanding that, such as course title and what it covered)
First Aid (it should have covered Babies, Juniors and Adults)
Lifeguard (tells people you are a good swimmer, and could be useful for a family with their own pool, as they can then have a pool party which is supervised by a qualified lifeguard - their pool insurance company is bound to like that)

Irrelevant: multiple university degrees
I don't think those help an application much. So don't give much, if any, info about them.

Your self description all sounded really great til the slightly off key "attitude" bit about bimbos and dads etc kicked in.

If you can curb that in interview with agencies and parents alike, I think you'll be snapped up super quick as you sound imminently qualified.

3NAB · 29/03/2008 15:38

Experience is more important than qualifications imo. Newly qualified who knows all the theory but very little practical or someone who has done it but doesn't have the right certificates?

PellMell · 29/03/2008 16:28

I didn't personally find your comment rude at all

I was simply pointing out that you might not literally mean what you typed because pre pubescent kids coming on to dads would be a no-no comment(especially from a person seeking a job as a nanny)

I understood it was a joke but with the other negative comments I was left with the impression that you are feeling pissed off.
