Question for Nannies

Hey Nannies,

I've been a Nanny for years. I've worn clothes suitable for winter, clothes suitable for summer.

A question, what do you wear to work? Do you go with the old plain top, do you have a professional look, or even wear a uniform?

I wanted to ask this, has taking care of small children is a messy affair! I just go with a plain black top, however at the same time I would like to at least look proffesional in what I wear. Question is what ! So, I thought I'd ask other Nannys there thoughts. ☺

This is a very weird question. Why don’t you just look at what other nannies you know are wearing?

TinkerTiger · 29/02/2024 16:17

Really?

A question, what do you wear to work? Clothes.

Do you go with the old plain top? No. I wear what I like, something comfortable. Currently I typically wear a t-shirt and sweatshirt, long trousers.

do you have a professional look? No.

even wear a uniform? No, not a Norland nanny or work for families who would want a nanny to wear a uniform. In the past (15 years ish ago) I did have some polo shirts which were embroidered with my website URL, which if someone read it would mean they knew I was the hired help. But I don't bother about that these days, no website now even.

I wear jeans or leggings and a top/jumper. Not very fancy but as you say, if you’re really getting stuck in to your job, you’re more than likely to come home covered in paint/snot or with a squashed raisin on your bum.

However, I guess it also depends on the family you work for. For one of my jobs, I needed fancy dresses for cocktail hour in the south of France. 🇫🇷

@nannynick Thank you ! Yes, I guess comfortable at the end of the day. The polo wear sounded nice though :-)

@Gardencentre Thank you for your reply too! Leggings, good idea.
Hahah, true about the raisin! I came home with rice on my socks the other day!

I just wear jeans and a top definitely not smart .

I always wore comfortable clothes that can be washed and hung up.
I think uniforms are a thing of the past although a polo shirt with a logo of your company sounds really nice @nannynick

Yes. Odd interest in how nannies (who are often fetishised) dress.

If you're concerned with looking professional, start with your written expression, as many parents form their first impressions from CVs, profiles and covering letters.

I've only ever met one nanny who had to wear uniform, she was a Norland graduate and the family preferred her to wear the uniform when out and about (and push a large vintage silvercross with their baby in). She wore her own clothes when in the house.
She did not work for the family for long.

I tended to wear leggings or jeans and a polo shirt and jumper or longish top.

As long as it's decent and comfy I don't think it matters.

@User478 Thank you :-)
