Do CMs get sick pay?

Hi, this has been touched on in a thread further down but I'm fairly new to this so I'd like some help to clarify it please.

Dd's lovely CM is off this week with a virus. I've had a good read of the contract & it says nothing about her getting paid when she's off sick, but it seems a bit harsh that she should lose so much income from being poorly.

What do others do? Do you stick to the contract or pay as a goodwill gesture?

I am a cm, when I am available I get paid, when I am not available I don't, and this is very clear in my contract so everyone knows where they stand.

Is the contract an ncma one? If so theyusually have a time off section with it all laid out??

I've been a cm for four years and i've never known a cm get paid sick pay. This is usually because you would presumably have to find and pay for alternate childcare for the days she was off sick and would end up paying twice if you paid het too.

You sound like a parent any childminder would love to have, but from experience any time a parent can pay less they will.

Yes it's an ncma one, it doesn't mention anywhere that I can see about the CM being paid when she's off sick.

You are a lovely person suncream! No, generally speaking CM's don't get paid for days of sick. It depends on how you pay of course. If you pay a set fee each month regardless, then chances are, your cm has factored her sick days into this fee. If you pay different sums each month, then it might be different.

Its a lovely thought, either way, that you have considered her loosing out, but I'm sure she's aware that she won't be getting paid.

I don't know much about childminding per se, but I would have thought that a cm - like all self-employed people - don't receive sick pay (unless they have some sort of private insurance which is unlikely).

Happy to be jumped upon (gently) if I've got that completely wrong

Thanks ajh, but I'm really lucky that my mother's local & can have her this week. Just wondering. Thanks for your replies

My contract is like Kays so I don't get sick pay but a someone i used to know had it written into her contract. Its very kind of you to be concerned but i doubt very much that she is expecting anything.

MaureenMLove · 18/03/2008 14:25

Snooks, rest assured, you are exactly right! (I'm a CM!)

I'm a cm and it's in my contracts that I do not get sick pay. I've only had one occasion where I was off sick for 3 days in very upsetting circumstances. One of the mums refused point blank my reimbursement of fees for these 3 days, bless her!!

It is very kind of you, but I do doubt she will be expecting any pay.

Sick pay? You aren't allowed to be sick when you are a childminder!

No unfortuately we don't get sick pay as we are self employed and most of us don't get holiday pay either.

I wish there were parents like you suncream who think of our health as well as their children's.

Am just getting over mild flu symptoms, not man-flu like our husbands and partners get!
