Applying for new 15 hours free childcare

Hi
Anyone trying to or already applied for the new 15 hours free childcare for 2 year olds for working parents?
We currently get tax free childcare but are now eligible for 15 hours free from April but haven't got a clue how to apply. The gov website just keeps sending me round in circles and don't know how to apply for it

Listen if your first thought is that the 15-30hours will be spent sun tanning and drinking stella that's more of a issue with your social circle. Some things take time and commitment to take off.

Hopefully the amount you’d have to demonstrate as profit and tax you’d be required to pay make this non viable.
If not, you moan about covid contracts etc, then plan to commit a similar fraud. Good role model.

hipyy · 07/01/2024 17:10

@punjama I would be careful and look into it more before you apply. On the application you have to confirm that you are expected to earn over a certain amount each week for the next 3 months

Ok will just sit around doing nothing adding no economic to the economy and just go on unemployment benefits.

You do realise my concern is about scaling to 5k to 10k to more. For that you need time.

Say I only manage 7k in first year You want me to give up second year?

You lot are so dim. Surround yourself with certain people then expect the same from rest. Enjoy your day 👍

Staels · 07/01/2024 17:18

You plan to pay no, or minimal, tax as your business is a non starter. Yet you want to take thousands out of the system. Does this make you smart!? I’d rather be dim if so.
At least you have a shiny new camera to take pictures of yourself doing “nothing”.

yep. look if that can be done then why not. i do this as a hobby and it has some interest from my social circle. how would i possible know if it will take off. if im only able to generate 5k then would you prefer i stopped altogether in 2nd year? seems like resetting the clock would be better idea if possible. by then 2nd child is older even more and those 15 hours - 30 hours can be used even more productively / properly to get it going.

honestly, if we werent funding things like war abroad and wasting money through corruption etc then we wouldnt even need to discuss this as it would be provided to everyone.

Edited

Why not? How about because it's taking food out of the mouths of other people while you friff around pretending to be a Boss Babe? Funded places are so limited and for everyone who scams the system like you want to, there are people who didn't get funded childcare who would have actually contributed to society as carers, nurses, teachers etc. So do it if you want but don't complain at the wait next time you go to A+E or that your gran can't get a carer or that your kid has a string of supply teachers because no one can take the full time job.

if im only able to generate 5k then would you prefer i stopped altogether in 2nd year?
Yes. If you can't support yourself, get a proper job. You have children to think about and their futures and you also need to provide for your own retirement. If 5k is enough to support you all (including paying your childcare bill) then crack on. Otherwise you haven't made 5k have you? You're operating at a loss if you can't pay your childcare to do the work!

I don't think starting a business is for you if you can't follow the law (self assessment is a bitch if you fuck up and get audited), and never mind the legalities of actually running a business such as IP laws, and if you can't actually add numbers up.

BiscuitsandPuffin · 07/01/2024 17:25

Also thanks OP and PPs for clarifying how to actually sort out the childcare for April, I'll wait until we reconfirm the tax-free childcare.

punjama · 07/01/2024 17:27

Why do I plan to? You think I don't want to earn the money? You think I want to send my kid away for 15 hours and do what? Nothing and earn nothing? You think I don't want to scale this up to help earn money to eventually be able to send them to private school?

And I said like not photography, simply something that doesn't require ongoing investment like reselling stock or drop shopping etc . It is perfectly viable since it's an actual job people do (surprisingly just like influencer and social media manager is). You seem to have gotten wrong impression. Probably because of the crowd you surround yourself with.

Oh thank you yes it is.

Having a business will also require you to be likeable and honest. Think hard if that’s for you 😀

i mean i dont need to be likable to a bunch of random strangers who want to assume the worst in people and then attack them.

as i said my own social circle have been encouraging me to do this for ages and the plan is for it to spread word of mouth initially based on the good work done.

anyway not sure why im even bothering to reply you do you and ill do me :)

Staels · 07/01/2024 17:58

I think it’s fair to assume the worst based on your intended actions and posts on this and other threads.

katmarie · 07/01/2024 18:01

You have to make a minimum amount per week to qualify, of £166.72 per week. You will need to evidence this income on your annual tax return. If you don't make the minimum income, then you will not qualify for the tax free element, and HMRC will seek to recover the money they have paid to you. So, feel free to try and game the system but I wouldn't mess about with HMRC.

hi thanks for this. the 166.72 figure is actually what helped me to find this which confirmed everything:

suppose wasn't using the right keywords.

anyway to calm people down i've done my own research a bit more and to help answer others question - you can only have 1 start-up period every 5 years

The search function to look at posters' previous posts.

Out of interest and being very nosey! Why do you put kisses on your posts?

Can I also ask...
Do you have to pay top up on top of this? I'm told my childminder is only funded £x an hour and so I would be billed the remainder to make up for what we pay now (if that even makes any sense?). I'm sure it's right but just wanting to check as this is my first time doing this

Yes of course, why would any setting offer funding if they were going to be paid less than normal?

hipyy · 10/01/2024 21:52

@KateyCuckoo it was just a question for some clarity as it is not explained anywhere I've read. As I said, not doubting that it's wrong but my child goes for less than the funded hours so just asking...

OP posts:
RoofHelp · 11/01/2024 06:53

They cannot charge a 'top up' to their own funded rate but you can expect to pay for consumables your child uses whilst in their care.
But I'm aware that many do charge a 'top-up' to keep their business viable, as the funded rate is likely (but not always) to be less than their own hourly rate.

Staels · 11/01/2024 07:43

when I spoke to my childminder back half of last year the gov funded amount they receive is less than their standard hourly rate.
childminders cant necessarily do money making initiatives like a nursery can so charge a top up, called admin fee, to make up the difference. If they didn’t it just wouldn’t be viable to accept gov funded places.
Unsurprisingly they also said they didn’t know the amount the gov would give under the new scheme.

MumAlwaysWorries · 24/01/2024 12:29

Yeah, everyone has to charge a top up otherwise it works out under minimum wage. Some nurseries will be splitting the allocation most likely across a full day and a half day so they can still earn on the half day (i.e. do a 10 hour day and a 5 hour day). It sucks but otherwise means our childcare practitioners end up on a slave rate if they rely on Government "promises".

Crabbiscuits · 13/02/2024 19:31

I reconfirmed as usual (no additional form or anything) then went back on the homepage/menu "Your childcare service account" there was a new option to select called
"Free Childcare For Working Parents"
Clicked there and the code was there
