Driving costs for nanny

2yr old who has been looked after by the same nanny for 16 months. The nanny has recently moved and bought a car. She is now asking if I can provide a permit for parking whilst she is at work. There is no easily accessible non permit parking and so I am currently doing daily visitors permits on the weekly days that it suits both of us.
Driving my daughter would make her life easier, but is not essential (and not happening at the moment).
I am assuming if I agreed to her taking my daughter in the car then I become liable for mileage and cost of insurance rising as business use? How much are other people paying?

I don’t pay for my nanny’s car insurance, but I do cover her mileage for business use (so, not her commute, but I’ll pay if she takes DD out to playgroup etc.). Personally, I’d pay for the nanny to have a parking permit.

How much is a permit? I think pay for it and pay her mileage. No need for you to pay insurance or towards her car costs - she should have business insurance if she’s driving your daughter

I’m not in the UK, so “rates” would be different. When I worked somewhere with challenging parking, my employers paid on the days I couldn’t find free parking (usually snow related here).

If I drive kids, I negotiate a rate, but in the US, I think the tax approved rate is 60c per mile.

In your case, if paying for a permit is financially feasible, I’d do that, and then pay a mileage rate if the nanny drives your LO to activities at your request.

Technically, since you didn’t ask your nanny to move or buy a car, you aren’t responsible for her parking costs, but if she’s good and reliable, it’s probably in your best interests to do so.

The problem is that I can’t give her a permit (apparently childcare is not covered by “carers responsibility”) and so have to do daily visitors permits, of which I am only entitled to a limited number. It’s on an app and so it means me logging in and completing every single day.

ok but what are the other options? Is it possible for her to get there another way? If so you’ll have to tell her you’ve run out of permits.

we paid the maximum permissible by hmrc which was 45p/mile. Obviously you wouldn’t pay for her travel to and from her home. This is when we moved out if London.

we had the same issues with the parking permits in London, so nannies got public transport (and also wouldn’t have wanted to use them all for that reason). You’ll just have tell her that you can’t get any more. One option could be to see if you have a ‘JustPark’ space nearby she can rent.

Can you not pay for a third permit ?

That's what one of my friends bosses did

Mileage is 45p per mile which will cover wear and tear

Rate has been that for decades

Should go up tbh sue to rising costs of petrol
