Going rate for nannies?

I have no experience of nannies at all, but I might have need of one soon. I'm launching a new business which is going to be very busy if it goes the way it's expected to.

I have a very placid 12 month old (1 on Friday!) so there aren't multiple children/school runs to do. Light housework would be a bonus, but not essential.

How much can I expect to pay?

My DD did private nannying when she was 19/20. No formal qualification, but a year of looking of all pre-school age groups in childcare settings. She looked after one 15 month old and charged £15 per hour. The days were often long(ish), for example 8am to 6.30pm, but varied in length. She used to tidy up the kitchen and wipe the surfaces when the toddler was asleep, but tbh, by the time she'd made a cup of tea and eaten her packed lunch, the toddler was often waking up.

That's probably as cheap as it gets. 9am-6pm, five days a week would be £675 a week.

Where do you live?

Location will make a difference. In the South East I expect it will be in the £16-£22 gross per hour range, maybe more in some parts of London.

Nannytax salary survey, 2022/23 tax year: www.nannytax.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Nannytax-Salary-Index-22-23.pdf

You could use that as a guide.

You advertise the job, with salary detail and see who applies. If you do not get suitable applicants then increase the salary.

Make sure you understand the costs involved. Employers NI, pension scheme, food whilst in duty, activities costs and mileage if nanny uses their car to transport your child. Payroll admin, contract of employment (nanny payroll companies can help, their fees are typically around £200 a year).

https://www.childcare.co.uk/ Look on here for nannies in your area, that will give you an idea of cost. It makes no difference how many children you have to the hourly rate, it will be the same for one baby as it is for 2 or 3 children.

This ranges hugely. I have a friend who works as a private nanny for £60k a year. She does not do any cleaning/tidying duties beyond the nursery.

If you want to be able to claim towards childcare, they would need to be registered and you, as their employer, are responsible for paying annual holiday and maternity leave etc. So don’t just look at per hour as the costs are greater.

On a childcare info page:
Here are a couple of examples to show what you could expect to pay.
Full Time Live Out:
£12-£15 Net per hour
Total cost for an employer based on a 45 hour week: £3,450-£4,500 per month
Part Time Live Out:
£13-£15 Net per hour
Total cost for an employer based on a 25 hour week: £1,850-£2,250 per month

As pointed out it’s not just about the hourly rate. Roughly if you multiply hourly salary by 1.4 that’s the true cost of an employee. So a £15 hourly rate costs you £21 to account for holiday pay, ni, pension etc.?

SherbetDips · 13/11/2023 17:54

I get paid 16 pounds an hour net, and nannies don’t tend to do light housework. Nursery duty’s only so cooking for kids, keeping toys clean and tidy. Keeping nursery/bedroom tidy. Children’s laundry

My name is Sharan. I am based in London and have clients throughout London. Would you like assistance in finding your ideal Nanny?

Im afraid this is a, how long is a piece of string question. Are they qualified, if so which ones? Are they live in or live out etc? I charged 3k netto per month with my UHNW clients live in (my own flat with no rent or costs) and all food and expenses paid including flights home. This was nearly 10 years ago.
