How to calculate salary for enhanced salary + school holidays

Due to change in circumstances we are enhancing nanny’s hourly rate because we have minimal hours (around 20 p/w) and this would allow nanny almost a full time monthly pay. During school holidays we can’t afford the enhanced pay for 50 hours p/w. What’s the best workaround for us and the nanny?

We don’t want to reduce the enhancement during holidays when nanny will be working 30 more hours for regular rate so earning much the same. I don’t know if a set salary is the best way so the same monthly pay is received regardless of hours.

Any thoughts welcome

I think you might have to speak to the nanny and agree an arrangement in advance.

What about setting out in contract 20 hours per week school time/50 hours a week in school holidays. Maybe annual salary with a fixed ‘bonus’ which gets paid after summer holidays so that there isn’t an incentive just to leave just before the holidays? May need to include any times when the nanny can/can’t take holiday.

Think for the nanny a basic income which is still a good salary is key but still wouldn’t want them to feel a bit ‘cheated’ during the holidays.

Thanks so much! It’s a tricky one. We certainly don’t want them to feel cheated when working full on in the holidays. If you have any ideas of what would be an appropriate salary/ bonus I’d love to hear them! The going rate is £12-16 per hour. We are offering £28 for 20 hours but for 50 hours p/w that’s just impossible. This is new for everyone so even the nanny isn’t sure and we’re going round in circles which means we can’t get the contract done. We have 3 kids under 5 if it makes any difference

Personally I would employ them full time year round. The cos would be pretty much the same! Or 35-40 hours year round with an additional 10 hours overtime required in school holidays.

You could try and recruit a nanny/housekeeper or look at child related duties to add during term time such as children’s washing and general child related admin.
