I’m struggling with feeding. Everything is force fed. He will never sit and think i want to eat. It is always try and find a gap and try and fit something in. How do i change this

Food before one is just for fun. At this age food is exploratory. Tasting and feeling. Milk is the bulk of calories. I wouldn't advocate force feeding, I imagine it's quite distressing for your LO.

Hmm fellow mum of a 9 month old here. Mine gets really hungry and chows down but it took him a while to figure it out. I started mixing solids into his diet at six months and took him ages to work it out. Have you just started introducing them? honestly as long as he’s still getting adequate milk feeds at this age I think it’s ok if he’s still not sure about solids. Have you tried baby led weaning? My boy wouldn’t eat purées and refused to be spoon fed, still won’t eat if I offer it from my hand, wants to do it alone. At nine months I feed him what we eat pretty much, he loves grabbing at pasta, broccoli etc. Sorry if this is what you already do!!!
If in doubt though I would always consult a medical professional.

Yes I second that, I think force feeding will put him off more. My baby has a weird palate too, doesn’t want traditional baby foods like banana and fruits. Loves steamed broccoli (quite fun to grab and easily held) and loves pasta, salmon, avocado, chunks of cucumber.

He isn’t the type to bring things to his mouth. So ill give him carrots etc but he will throw them. However if im eating my lunch he’ll stand then ask for some. But if i give him his type of food he doesnt want it. Hes definitely not interested in purée

Give him food off your plate and see how you get on.

What's his type of food? Normally you give your food without salt it doesn't have to be puree

Boiled vegetables. Or something like boiled chicken with the veggies. Fish fingers etc

No wonder he prefers your food! His sounds very dull. I'd highly recommend reading Gill Rapley's baby led weaning book. It takes off all the pressure around feeding. You really don't want to make food a battle ground.

Loobydoobies · 29/07/2023 03:05

Best thing is to sit down with him, and serve you both the same thing (modified slightly where necessary). Model how to eat.

Food before one is important for a variety of reasons.

Hi @MotherTryingHerBest i have a 9mo old. I am struggling with feeding too. I have resorted to just giving her what she likes (healthy foods) just so she's getting something. I'm just going with the flow and at her pace. I think i've found this part the most difficult, a bottle every 2hrs was easier lol! x

Check out Solid Starts. An amazing resource for weaning and picky eating
