I think the advice you gave yourself and those who have posted are good - I would start with the EBM as well, and it very well could be some sort of reflux/allergy to the formula..

I am sure the mum doesn't blame you, and you are trying to help out! Hang in there x

Thanks crace, fingers tightly crossed baby will take EBM with me if I persevere

Some babies will take ebm from other care givers. Perseverance definitely, baby is so young and it's amazing what they pick up as "normal" just given some time and gentle guidance.

My dd, on the other hand, looked at us with disgust. BM comes from MUMMY, not that horrible plastic thing. I think if necessity had dictated I went back to work we would have gotten there in the end. But I didn't!

You will do great, I know you have the patience and care to help them out.

Well, fingers crossed we have success in the morning Baby gets dropped off at 9.30am and so far, has been having a bottle by around 10am. Will let you know how it goes!!

YIPPEEEEEEEEEE, baby went straight for EBM in bottle for me and had 2 and quarter oz's

Wehey! Well done

looneytune · 26/02/2008 11:11

Cheers, well chuffed. Only thing is, she was very unsettled for quite a while after but hoping that was just down to wind as she's settled now (got loads up to start with and mid-feed but was really upset still and took quite a while but then one last burp came up and then she was fine)

well done looney

crace · 26/02/2008 12:48

Could you try 1/2 an oz and then wind her until it all goes down? DS was like this, otherwise it would all come up

looneytune · 26/02/2008 16:26

Well I do every oz so suppose could try every half. Thing is, mum said baby is like this even when breast feeding which has me stumped as thought it was bottles that caused it

I know when my smallest one was about that age we had to try and put him on formula as I had to have really strong anti biotics, so couldn't feed him. He hated everything, and I found that SMA bunged him up and made him sick as did Farleys and found that only Hipp went in eventually. In the end doc said that it was better just to feed him and have done with it as he started to loose weight.

I do however find that the bottles that he had made a huge difference to wind. Dr Brown's are great as were the Tommy Tippee like breast ones that let the air in while they drink.

My oldest son actually used to have a sippy cup at that age as he refused the bottle, and infact he never had a bottle at all, even when I went back to work before I became a CM.

Good luck with the feeding. I know I used to come through the door looking like DOlly Parton and ds would oblige with a huge feed when he could lol.

looneytune · 28/02/2008 17:41

Thanks for that

LOL at Dolly Parton!!!

Sounds suspiciously like reflux LT - or what DS had an underdeveloped esophageal flappy thing (you like my medical jargon?) but it most definitely caused EVERYTHING to come back up often. Might explain what is going on there - it wasn't until he was over a year that he stopped.

monkeyboys · 29/02/2008 00:47

sounds like you're doing a fab and very caring job

re; the windiness. agree with the Dr Brown's bottles and winding through feeds. both mine have been bf with bottles of ebm here and there. they both needed winding after boob or bottle just more so after bottle (ie better with breast but still an issue). i think its a common myth about bf babies not needing winding - all the ones i know (quite a few!) have needed winding most of the time. as mentioned by a pp, a fast letdown may make thhings worse.

at 7 weeks, baby may have colic - has you or mum tried colic drops? there are lots of options out there (infacol, dentinox colic drops, gripe water, colief) ans different babies respond differently to each. infacol was rubbish for my boys, despite friends swearing by it, whereas dentinox was amazing stuff!!

uf baby is happier upright after feeds, it might be worth considering reflux. the valve between stomach and oesophagus may not be completely developed, which isn't uncommon and usually resolves itself with time. keeping upright as poss for at least half hour after feeds may help. worth seeing a dr if its making baby really uncomfortable/excess vomiting/not gaining wt. my ds1 had awful gripingpains and used to cry just to pass a teeny bit of wind which turned out to be a dairy allergy easily diagnosed after his first bottle of formula (around 5-6,onths). intolerances can be a but more tricky but worth bearing in mind.

just some thoughts for you to consider. sounds like baby has been much happier after ebm though - long may it continue!
