After School Nanny - where to find?

EdPops · 04/07/2023 18:45

DS starts reception in September, with both myself and my DH working full time we're considering a nanny to help out with after school child care (approx 3.30pm-6.30pm, Mon-Fri) but have idea where the best place to start looking is.

Any advice? We're based in NE London.

Koru Kids or ask around your neighbours or local FB groups for any nannies looking for hours.

Try Childcare.co.uk or your local FB page.

Thanks. Are the nanny's listing on Koru Kids vetted or qualified in any way?

I found very few willing to do such limited hours when I was looking for similar. Though I understood, I am not sure many people that could live on wages of 15 hours a week, nor find another job mornings/ early afternoons only that would complement the hours you are offering. I ended up having to change my childcare plans entirely. Good luck!

I did this a few years ago for a family living nearby. They had advertised on Indeed. Also worth posting on Gumtree, NextDoor etc. It goes without saying that you'd need references, DBS etc.

The only way I was able to cover this was to pay one of the SAHMs who had kids at the same school. I paid a very good per hour rate, which made it attractive.

She picked up my kids from school along with her own, gave them tea, and then I picked them up from her house around 6pm.

It worked out very well. She wasn't "qualified" or anything, but in my mind having a kid or two of your own is all the experience/training you need.

SheilaFentiman · 05/07/2023 09:39

I think this is more usually covered by a childminder, as they can charge for several children from a school and look after their own too.

Remember that you will be an employer to the nanny who may have other work to figure out tax on etc.

SheilaFentiman · 05/07/2023 09:40

What would you want to do in the holidays?

FourSeasonsTotalLandscaping · 05/07/2023 09:47

We've got an after school nanny through Koru Kids. They give them some first aid training and a DBS check but that's about it as far as qualifications go! I think your best chance of finding someone through that route is if you live in a university town or city - it's the type of job that can suit students but not many other people as the hours are so limited. The downside of this is that students do move on/change timetables so it can be a bit inconsistent - you're not likely to have the same nanny for years!

The main advantage of Koru Kids is they sort out all the "employer" stuff for you like registering for NI and tax so it's very simple.

NurseryNurse10 · 06/07/2023 22:34

Koru kids as if you don't want to be responsible for sorting out tax and insurance, they will sort all that out. It's very popular in London so I would imagine you could find someone easily enough.
Also bubble childcare app is good for inset days or adhoc babysitting needs.

why not try a childminder.
not in your area, but one near me is rated outstanding, a qualified school teacher, now prefers to work to her own programme.
children are delivered to her house from 7am.
she walks them to school. and collects later. parents pick up from her house up to 7pm.
she delivers/collects to 2 schools, about a mile away.
the children love it.

I’m a TA and have done after school nannying.

I found my jobs on local Facebook pages or through a nanny agency.

Good luck in your search

We've started to meet a few nanny's now that we found on chidcare.co.uk.

What are the sort of credentials we should be asking to see before we proceed with employing one i.e. references, background checks, qualifications etc?

This is our first time looking for a nanny and i'm not sure what the correct process is in terms of vetting who you hire and what info a nanny should be expected to share.
