Self employed mothers help?

Hi

I went for an interview for a live out nanny and was offered the job. I stupidly assumed the parents would be aware they would become my employer and responsible for paying tax/NI etc. Well they weren't and asked if I would consider being self employed.

I have heard thats not possible but wondered if it is possible to be a self employed mothers help? Mum is on maternity leave until July and is looking for an immediate start. I know nothing about being self employed or how to work out what tax and ni I would need to pay. Does anyone know if my weekly figure was say £200 per week in hand what deductions I would need to make? Or does it vary? I did check HRMC but still none the wiser

I'm confused

Only considering this as the family are great and nanny jobs here in my area of Scotland are pretty scarce. Sorry to ramble on

yanny self-employed status isn't really something you decide about yourself, it's to do with the terms and conditions and working situation you are in. A position like you are talking about couldn't really be self-employed. Have a look at this about it. Towards the end of that page is a section about 'determining your employment status'. There are a list of things to think about which would make you self-employed, and for a job like this you wouldn't be.

Please don't allow these people to pressure you into doing this, they are attempting to deny you your employment rights and are making themselves vulnerable to all sorts of fines as well.
