How do I find out who needs a CM in my area?

I've looked at the local website regarding childcare jobs and it doesn't mention any CM jobs. I suppose the CM advertise themselves and the families look for them. Is that right?

I am NNEB qualified and have done my CM course.

I need to earn some more money. I am nannying part time (after school) at the moment.
I have thought about putting a sign up at ds's school.

I'd love to do Doulaing but can't afford the training.

Hi Princess !

Once you are qualified as a CM then you need to get advertising your setting.

Produce some professional posters and flyers, printed rather than handwritten.

A list to try:

Childrens' Information Service at your local authority

Local paper

Doctors' Surgery

Library

School/Preschools

Health visitor's consulting rooms

HTH

Whereabouts in Herts are you?
Some areas (eg Hertford) are desperate for childminders

tissy · 20/02/2008 15:12

we found our childminder through childcarelink

I've just bumped up this advertising tips thread in case it's of any use

It can take your local CIS several weeks to get your details sent through from Ofsted... but keep calling CIS regularly, so that once you appear on their system, they can check your details are correct, add any additional information you want listed, and upload your data to ChildcareLink. Your info will then be available to parents searching ChildcareLink plus to parents calling CIS for a list of childminders. Keep CIS updated with news regarding your vacancies, always good to have uptodate info.

Hi everyone, thanks thats great

I knew I needed to put my details somewhere but haven't got round to it yet. Plus I did wonder if there was anyway I could see who actually wanted a cm just to see whats around. A mum I talk to at swimming said that netmums have a board where people post saying they want a cm. I may look there.
I really only want a child or children who are my ds or dd's age. And if they are school age then from ds's school. I'm fussy!

I'm not in Hertford BTW.

A boy in ds's class has a cm and she is the local cm coordinator or something. I may chat to her.

Having ofstead round just seems scary. Plus I dont know how I'd get on with all the tax form filling and policies you need to write. And it sounds silly but I really don't want a fire guard!

I need to earn more money though and this is what I'm qualified to do. Plus it fits in with ds and dd.
Pre kids I was a FT nanny and then a PT nanny and a nursery nurse at a local nursery school.

Some school admin staff can be a mindful of information... so chat with the staff in the school office, to let them know that you are now a registered childminder, they may even take a few business cards, and may have a notice board for an advert (depending on the schools policy).

Yes I think you can advertise at our school.

Also once word gets out that I'm looking for work I think people will come to me if they are interseted. Everyone knows whos a CM and point parents looking for CM in the right direction.

I just need to do it.

I suppose in the end its up to me who I choose to look after. I'm worried about getting the right children/parents.
