Hi my baby is one week and 4 days old during the day she drinks about 3 to 3 1/2 ounces of milk, but at night and early in the morning she drinks just over 2 ounces she’s on 4 hourly feeds I worry that she will get dehydrated at night :( is there anyway I can get her to drink more at night

Congratulations on your new arrival!

I wouldn’t worry too much as long as you’re getting plenty wet nappies through the day and she is putting on weight. She’ll take what she needs 😊

DustyLee123 · 25/05/2023 07:49

Don’t worry as long as she’s having regular wet nappies.

As long as she's taking enough milk over 24 hours your fine.

4hr feeds at one week old is too long

Set a routine for 3hrs daytime so 7 10 1 4 7 and then df/wake 10/11 ans then baby will wake naturally in night usually 3hrs sometimes 4 at night if had 5 good feeds daytime

@Blondeshavemorefun i was told by the midwife to put her on 4hr feeds while she was in hospital as she wasn’t drinking enough while on 3hr feeds only about 40-50ml once She was put on 4hr feeds she had more of an appetite

@Spockrates follow the advice you received at the hospital - it is more likely to be based on your baby’s specific circumstances than the advice online.

I think I switched to four hourly feeds at night at either one week or two (can’t remember). As I recall DC didn’t have as much overnight as during the day but I don’t remember the actual amounts.

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/05/2023 10:39

In the end If baby is having wet nappies and gaining weight then yes they will take what they want

Allowing baby to wake naturally at night /4hrs can happen

But daytime I would make sure 3hrs fed while less than 2w old

If worried talk to your hv

@Blondeshavemorefun she was actually 4 days old when they advised me to put her on 4hr feeds as her jaundice was going up and they said she needed to drink more milk to help it so they told me to try 4 hr feeds and not let her go longer than 4 1/2 hours she was in transitional care at the time

Have you had her weighed? That might reassure you.

Spockrates · 30/05/2023 11:55

@DifficultBloodyWoman when she was on 3hr feeds I was really struggling to get her to drink the amount she was supposed to be drinking and her jaundice went up to right below the treatment line, they said try 4 hours and they’d test her again the next day so I fed her every 4 hours she was hungrier and drank more the next day her jaundice was down to 3 boxes below treatment line and kept going down

I was told the same in hospital. It was terrible advice by healthcare professionals. My baby is 4 months and feeds 2-4 oz every 2-3 hours this is what suits him. Whereas my oldest would guzzle an 8oz bottle every 4hrs at 4 months. Every baby is different and the expectations put on feeding is anxiety inducing. Although he drinks small amounts, he drinks them more often so amounts to the same. Feed them when they are hungry and want it like breastfeeding mums do. If they’re losing weight, refusing bottles or uncomfortable and in pain then there is something wrong other then that go by instincts. I have had a nightmare with feeding, long story.
