Do CMs "share" their Ofsted reports with their mindees' parents?

Just getting to the stage of looking for a CM and it was suggested to me that now CMs are Ofsteded look at their reports. Fine, but looking online I learn for data protection/security the CM is not identified in the report.

So given that, do CMs share the report with their mindees' parents? Would I be unreasonable on a pre-visit to ask? Or do parents generally not bother & I'm just being a bit OTT?
(I will ultimately decide on gut instinct & whether we all get on, but imo it's nice to have it confirmed.)

I always give prospective new parents my Inspection report to read when they visit me.

gigglewitch · 18/02/2008 21:19

our CM always has. She's showing off really cos she is sooooo fab!

MaureenMLove · 18/02/2008 21:19

I offer mine and if they want to look, they can. I wouldn't be offened if someone asked, its a perfectly acceptable thing to do, imo.

KatyMac · 18/02/2008 21:21

Gosh yes

How else can I persuade con prove show to the parents what a sane normal suitable fantastic super outstanding childminder I am?

I always show off

Heated · 18/02/2008 21:23

Thanks ladies.

To be honest Heated I have been know to force parents to look at mine

funnyhaha · 18/02/2008 21:25

Totaly reasonable to ask, imo. My cm included a copy in her general info pack (but then she got an outstanding, so she would ) have to say, some cms I saw didn't volunteer the info, but always provided it if asked. I would be very very uncomfortable with a cm who wasn't prepared to show me her ofsted. But would be happy to take ofsteds with a pinch of salt...

Heated · 18/02/2008 21:26

Another question, which is how seriously should I take the Ofsted rating?

The first two listed near me are satisfactory, the next one is good...haven't read any further. And is it satisfactory, good, excellent?

Satisfactory, good, outstanding

IMO OFSTED are more about paperwork & systems than about childcare

I know satisfactory childminders who are wonderful with children but don't 'do' paperwork
I also know outstanding childminders I would not leave a pet rock with (never mind a dog or a child)

Read the report - if I bit worries you copy it on here we might be able to translate

'lax attitude to hygiene'?? is that didn't wash the children hands before snack or didn't have separate hand towels for each child or refuse to use antibac........it's difficult to tell

MaureenMLove · 18/02/2008 21:31

You need to read the whole thing to decide tbh. I'm satisfactory, purely because they came to see me on a day I didn't have any mindees and my paperwork is crap! HOWEVER, if you read my client references, they rate me as pretty damn good! I have also been full for 12 years and everyone of those mindees has come by word of mouth.

Heated · 18/02/2008 21:34

Will be going to visit then with an open mind!

Thanks for the offer Kaymac re translating the reports, & others, you've been brill.

Adding 'client references' to CM vocabulary and will be looking for a CM who is full, lol!

OP posts:
KatyMac · 18/02/2008 21:39

No necessarily - I haven't been full apart for about 4 months (mind you I do have 9 spaces)

There are lots of reasons to not be full;moving house/redundancy/family situations

Some childminders operate a waiting list but if you have to go back to work you are on a time schedule that might not wait for the space

MaureenMLove · 18/02/2008 21:40

She'll be the one who looked completely knackered, with a 'lived in' home!

MaureenMLove · 18/02/2008 21:41

There's a list of questions to ask and things to look out for on here somewhere. I'll have a look.

southernbelle77 · 18/02/2008 21:44

I offer my report to parents to look at! I really quite like them to look at it as I feel rather proud of it
But it certainly isn't all about reports! It is about the feeling you get about the childminder and how they interact with your child.

MaureenMLove · 18/02/2008 21:46

This one is your Katy! I'm sure there was a huge list that Shoshe did, but I can't find it in amongst all the Staff Room threads!

Heated · 18/02/2008 21:47

What was it about an 'outstanding' CM you'd wouldn't leave a 'pet rock with? Can Ofsted get it that wrong?

(Already looking kindly on all 'satisfactory' CMs who haven't got time for paperwork )

OP posts:
KatyMac · 18/02/2008 21:49

It's all about being spot on planning, paperwork, rules, regs, control

Childminding should be about rules - but only as far as safety - it's mainly about cuddles and hugs and doing what the children want

Heated · 18/02/2008 21:50

Thanks MML ! Have copied and pasted to take with me.

Go and see them for yourself. An ofsted rating is what they see on the day and means nothing in some cases. I know of a 'good' childminder who has been systematically abusing the children she has been caring for over a number of years. Ofsted know **ck all!

KaySamuels · 19/02/2008 18:30

tigersmum that is shocking!

Heated think my colleagues have summed up everything I would have said. I have my Ofsted inspection in my folder I show parents with my certificates, CRB check, references and thank you cards. I am also a show off!

tigersmum · 19/02/2008 18:38

Thats putting it mildly!
All childminders should show their ofsted reports, but be wary, they mean nothing. Speak to the other parents and see how the children she cares for are with her and get a feeling for yourself and if you are uneasy about anything , run a mile. Some people are experts at deception.
I dont mean to put you off childminders as I am one myself but there are BAD ones and they are not easily unearthed by reading their reports.

looneytune · 19/02/2008 19:14

Agree with everyone else. I show my Ofsted report, References and Thank You cards (but they've usually been seen prior to visit as on my website) but what sells me best is the Refs/Cards and NOT the Ofsted report. I have a good report with 2 outstanding but agree it's easy to 'Do a Good Ofsted' and then be different the rest of the time. Of course I'm always good Just saying that I also know some people I wouldn't ever recommend, even if they have got an outstanding.
