Cost of a full time nanny

I looked into the cost of a full time nanny for 2 under 2,8.30-5.30pm: and also pick up a school aged child.

. It's coming up at well over £40k inc employer contribution. Is this right? Assuming £15 per hour.

It's actually working out to cheaper to use a nursery for 2 kids

for us £15/hr gross, 11.5 hours a day. So around £61k or so gross. closer to £70k cost to us with pension contributions in NI.

this is in london

High income family, 2 parents, 6 figures, 1 child, we pay more than the sums quotes all in for a nanny. I don't for one second under estimate this is a hugeprivilege but its also in my eyes not really worth it. I don't feel like we get value for money at all

Our lives are also revolving around the nanny including when we can take holidays and it is a fortune to have babysitting on top. We are broke every single month. Let me explain by broke - we do not have a car, we don't have a house either and we're both overdrawn per month.

I'm unconvinced when we stop paying these costs that we will look back and say it was "worth it" but then children create all kinds of irrational costs.

Then why still use a nanny if you don't think the cost is worthwhile

Use a cm or nursery. Be much cheaper

How did you not know that a highly trained professional dedicating their time exclusively to your children would be expensive?

They are more expensive because you get a more personal service tailored to your children’s needs.

AutumnTimeForCosy24 · 26/09/2024 17:21

Why would you expect a nanny dedicated just to your family, no schlepping the kids to/home, 3 rd child, school pick ups, outings, playgroups, other groups, naps to your child's needs, looked after when they're not well, etc etc to be cheaper than nursery??? & that's without considering care for the eldest in school holidays??

baffling.

Wished I'd waited until you'd posted! Much more succinct!

@threeisacharm18

as NannyNick mentioned, you don't need to use an Agency (pointless waste of money)

anyone you hire through an agency (be it nanny/teceptionist/forklift driver/it/anything) is going to cost you a lot more than a direct hire.

What has that got to do with the price of nannies?

confused

@Blondeshavemorefun

i assume DH wants a nanny & she doesn't, hence the attitude!

timetodecide2345 · 28/09/2024 02:29

My daughter is working as a nanny and she's paid well because the parents want flexibility so some days she works 11 hours and some days 4 hours, they also want her to travel. It's a very different service to a nursery.

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/09/2024 09:25

3 kids and a nanny is def much easier for you

Nanny comes to house. Nanny takes eldest to school with younger two

Nanny looks after ill kids

Nanny cooks meals for kids and does their washing

With nursery - you get all ready and take to nursery /school then self to work

You navigate /look after ill kids and they will be off with everything at nursery so won't be at work

You need to find holiday cover for eldest
