Childminder and universal credit

Hello. I'm a father of 8yo boy. I posted on here about claiming childcare costs some time ago. I forgot to ask. If childminders charge anything from £10-15 per hour, assuming I'm entitled to 15 hrs per week, but what rate? Would universal credit pay me back if my childminder charges £15 per hour? Does it have to be offset registered? There's a lot of childminders on websites but not all are offsted registered. Thank you for help.

Childminders don't generally charge that much, are you thinking of nannies?

Also 8 year olds aren't entitled to any funded hours.

Ok thanks guys. Yes childminder or nanny. Basically I need someone to look after my son on some weekend nights.

Childminders must be ofsted registered and won't cost that much. Some nannies can be ofsted registered and can cost that much but I think you can't get the UC childcare funded in your own home. If a nanny works from their own home more than half the time they are breaking the law and should be registered as a childminder.

Ask on your UC journal for clarification.

Try childcare.co.uk to find childminders. Also ask your local council family information service.

Is this while you work? My understanding is you can claim 80/85% back a month in arrears to support you attending employment. Childcare provider needs to be registered and invoice properly.

Youll struggle to get childcare on a weekend evening or overnight. You’ll need a nanny and no, that won’t be covered in your 15 hours. The per hour funding is around £4.20.

Childminders don’t tend to work evenings or weekends. I have struggled with this too. At 8 he won’t need a lot of “looking after” I’d try and find a responsible teenager to babysit. Or cultivate friendships and do reciprocal childcare.

You can only claim childcare costs if the provider is Ofsted registered and you are using that childcare to enable you to work. An eight year old will not get 15 hours free funding, that is for 2/3/4 year olds. If you are eligible for UC childcare element then they will pay 85% of childcare costs up to a certain amount but your overall award including childcare element is still reduced by earnings.

If it's weekends they might as even on £15 for one child they won't earn minimum wage and it's unlikely they will have 2 or 3 wanting a weekend so double or triple could be a normal charge for weekends.
