Ofsted registration for nannies: Is 'Common Core' a compulsory course?

Hi,
I know it has probably been discussed before, but yet another daft question on this: We are registering our new nanny, who has a teaching degree from her (EU) country. We have called Ofsted a number of times and (surprise, surprise) got a number of different answers as to:

  • whether she needs a formal qualification to be registered: I assumed this was going to be the same/similar as under SureStart where we paid for the 2-day MNT course - but one of the Ofsted people was insisting that no formal qualification is required and that childcare experience could be sufficient (???)
  • whether her EU teaching degree is acceptable or whether we need to pay some 'Common core' course/module

All of you registered nannies - can you, please, bring clarity as to what childcare qualification equals Common Core? (I think we are clear on the first aid and liability insurance + CRB but the Common Core leaves us slightly puzzled...)

Thank you so much!

Common Core = the list of approved qualifications (NNEB, DCE, BTEC, NVQ, NAMCW, ICP)

Yes she requires a piece of paper. The person from OFSTED is wrong.

Don't know about the EU degree but my gut feeling is no given that UK early childhood and teaching degrees aren't acceptable - the focus is not on providing care in a domestic setting, hence the problem.

ICP may be free in your area - I did mine for free in Birmingham, and got the 12 hour paediatric 1st Aid free with it, which was a bonus!

Thank you - that's what I thought. I have to say I am amazed at how much less user-friendly all Ofsted documents are. Having gone through the process with Surestart just over a year ago, I find Ofsted information/guidelines apalling...

[rant over - I am off to pay for the childcare course...]
