30 hours and 100k salary exceed

Hi all,
We have a 4 year old and over the past year we have been claiming the 30 hours, not expecting my salary to exceed 100k. Upon receiving my payslip today, it turned out to be exceed by £25.
Do you know what happens next? Are we going to have to pay last year's back to HMRC?
I'm moving jobs next month so my salary will definitely no exceed this amount. Can I still claim the 30hrs for the next year?

Thanks

It’s 100k ‘adjusted net income’ so can you make a charitable donation or a pension donation to offset it as it’s so close?

winelove · 28/03/2023 13:23

Do you have the option of doing salary sacrifice, maybe up your pension contribution.

dadlondon · 28/03/2023 13:26

Is this an option? How can I make this?

I don't think this would be an option since I'm already contributing max on my pension scheme from work. Can I do this independently?

Make a small charitable donation.

PuttingDownRoots · 28/03/2023 13:40

Ask for an unpaid day off?

ArcticSkewer · 28/03/2023 13:41

You may have already made enough charitable donations with gift aid ... any sponsored runs you paid towards etc?

You won't manage that in time for the year end. Could possibly set up a private pension in time

Make a small charitable donation.

So if I do this, how do I declare to HMRC? On my next self assessment? Can I donate to any charity?
Thanks again

Yes donate to any charity and gift aid it. Then declare at self assessment. When you do the self assessment (which you will have to as it's triggered by earning over £100k) you'll find plenty of other stuff to offset too. For example if you get 25p a mile for travel you can claim relief against the 20p between that and the max claimable of 45p a mile. I did my DH's for him this year due to a similar issue and we got an HMRC reimbursement of £750. And I forgot the Red Cross donations we made towards the Ukraine Crisis!

dcadmamagain · 28/03/2023 13:49

Make sure you do donation before tax year end on 5 april

That's very helpful Sophia, thanks for that.
We have already made some small donations to some GoFundMe pages for disaster reliefs. Do you think that might help?
Thanks again

Thanks everyone for helping out here.
As for the second question. Since I'm not expecting to exceed 100k for the year. Will I sill be able to claim the 30 hrs?

Give tax free childcare a call. We went over by maybe 1k and we were able to keep our 30 hours and tax free childcare. They said as long as its not thousands over then they can be lenient. Would be very surprised if they were bothered about £25.

Also if you do go over you don't need to pay it all back. It just stops from the time you go over the 100k limit. Due to working on commission its hard for me to predict if i will go over the 100k. So if I do its normally stopped in the last 3 months when I reconfirm and then restarted in the new tax year.

Why are you trying to get out of it? Why don't you just pay the childcare fee?

Probably because its several thousand pounds over a £25 over payment?

If it's an individual person's gofundme's then No. I think it needs to be a registered charity.

Also because the upper limit of 100k is ridiculous and unfair and shouldn’t be implemented at all. It is basically a tax on London and the surrounding areas where 100k salaries are very much needed to cover huge mortgages & rents (even on flats in shit areas!!).

Don’t forget that if one of a couple earns over 100k their children don’t get child benefit, they aren’t entitled to tax free childcare or the 30 hours subsidised, plus they are likely to be in the salary bracket where they loose their tax free allowance. But if two parents earn 99k they are entitled to it all (except child benefit).

In most areas 100k doesn’t make you rich anymore - though it does mean you usually work long hours so need lots of childcare!

Just went to 102k for this tax year and instantly said I was not eligible due to income when I reapplied. I paid 4k private pension (so 5k grossed up) in March to get me under the 100k adjusted income.

However there seemed to be no way of informing them in advance. I had to send off a mandatory appeal on this. Anyone been on similar circumstances? How long do they take to assess and will they agree with my reasoning?

Thanks

Good question. I haven't had to re-apply yet, but I suspect I'll have the same problem. From when can we do the self assessment?
Also, is HMRC asking you to pay last years claims back?
Thanks

For tax free childcare they have not asked for anything back. Simply booted me off the scheme when i tried to renew this quarter . You have to reapply every quarter but that is just a click button exercise and then they do background checks prob for any expected 100k income breaches...

2022- 2023 Self assessment you can do as soon as tax year over which is now. However if you employed best wait for your P60 and any P11D so you have the figures to hand.
