Part-time mum > Full-time job

Hi,
I am looking for some advice on what other mums/dads opinions are on this.

Before we had our second baby, I had said when I return to work (March this year) I wanted a part-time job. With everything having gone up in price and not owning our own property, since we rent, my partner wants me to work full-time.

Our boy isn't even 1 years old yet, and with our first I returned to work when he was 2.5 years old. I have found a job and been given the offer but it is 40 minutes away on public transport, as I don't drive due to a long-term medical condition, and it is also a full-time position.

I wanted to be able to be around for my boys and available when needed but with this job, he will have to be more attentive and it isn't something I wanted. He has offered to drop me off to the office but I have to get my own way back home, bearing in mind I can't see this being very reliable.

I feel guilty for not wanting to work full-time to start savings but even worse for not being around when needed. It won't be a permanent thing but we had IVF for our boy after trying for 3 years so I really wanted to be there until he was at least 2 years old.

I'm struggling with what to do and looking for others advice on what you would do in my situation before starting this new job.

It depends on your circumstances. None of us can tell you if the sums stack up for you SAH for a while longer, or whether PT or FT work is necessary.

YANBU to consider options other than this particular job right now, but it sounds like you need to do some budgeting calcs to figure out how part time you can afford to go. Factor in benefits too. It would be irresponsible for us to say "never mind, stay at home, they're only little once" if that would get in the way of putting food on the table and shoes on the kids' feet.
