I have a friend who wants to look after a 6yr old in her home from 6pm for 2 to 3 hours till mum collects. Does she have to be registered as a childminder to do this. any advice please.

Regularly? Daily?

Then yes, I think she does.

If she is looking after the 6 year old in the 6 year's home, then no, she's a nanny.

thanks for reply, it would be ad hoc but sometimes a few days a week. she does not want to get into any trouble. think it might be best if she did it at their home don't you ?

Care between 6pm and 2am is currently unregulated in England. See Care Standards Act 2000, 79A (8)

Just to add, I'm not a lawyer, so please seek legal advice if you require it.

thanks Nick, it all seems complicated to me. still think it's best for her to say 'no' to her house then she will not have probs.

Yes, easier to say "no" to doing it at her house, and do it at the child's home instead.

Is she going to get paid for this? If it's just a friendly arrangement, similar to a playdate, then I don't see how she would count as a CM. I regularly collect my friend's children from school, but then I'm not getting paid for it.

Just to say it's not 'pay' that counts, it's reward - so if your friend buys you a box of chocolates or a bunch of flowers that counts.

Thanks everyone for all your views. She will be getting paid, but i have passed info on to her and she has decided to say 'no' unless it can be done in childs house. Thanks again x
