I know we need to pay them minimum wage (£5.52 now?) but do we also have to pay for their taxes or is it £5.52 or whatever less taxes? Also NI contributions of how much?

And what about legal requirements re: time off and sick pay?

Lastly, what would happen if your assistant was off sick and the mindees were still due to come and you were then over your ratio?

  1. Pay is £5.52 you pay Tax & NI out of that then give them the balance

  2. 24 days paid leave (can include bank holidays) Sick pay/maternity/parental leave/public service time/jury service can be dealt with wrt the statutory minimums (there are lots more I think)

  3. all the above should be in a contract - email me & you can tinker with mine or I think you can get it from Business link - which also has tonnes of stuff about being an employer

  4. you close/send children home/have a spare

It is not an emergency there is no excuse for you to go above your numbers

NB you may not get an increase of numbers for an assistant OFSTED is notoriously fickle & floor space allowances apply

any more?

crace · 30/01/2008 19:37

Nope thanks that's it for now, I just need to work out if it is possible. Not going to do anything until after birth of baby in May but as I lose one I need to know how to still earn some money.

Remember the floor space stuff - it's the bit of the floor without furniture on

hi thought i'd intrude. Is having an assitant actually worth it by the time you pay everything out. I am trying to work out if it is more hassle than it is worth?

crace · 31/01/2008 15:02

I am wondering the same thing actually. It's more to fit a need that our village has. Trying to convince our school there is a need for after school clubs is proving to be an issue!

.

Well if I can have 2 children that overlap for 2 hours they might each bring in £25 pounds each but I might not get a variation so If I employ an assistant for 2 hours (£11.02 + 11%NI) I would be about £10 up on the day - plus I please 2 families

dorset · 31/01/2008 20:24

Daft question but the employer tax i would pay right it does not come out of there gross wage

KatyMac · 31/01/2008 20:42

You pay say £6 an hour but it costs you £6.66 (plus annual leave & some other bits)

dorset · 01/02/2008 09:49

Sorry Katy, how do you work it out is there a format to it

KatyMac · 01/02/2008 12:54

It's 11% NI
