Old complaint on Ofsted report of prospective CM - do I ask?

I'm visiting a CM to see if they would be suitable for my ds; I've seen a copy of their ofsted report, and there is a note of a complaint that was not upheld by ofsted. I wouldn't describe the complaint as very serious, but if it had been upheld, I would have some cause for concern.

My instinct is I want to ask about it - it was the kind of complaint that would be difficult to prove, and I suppose I'm looking for some reassurance from her. But I don't want to be unfair about something that was not upheld.

Thoughts?

Ask her.

Was it a complaint about care of her mindees?

crace · 30/01/2008 09:50

I would ask her! I am sure if it wasn't upheld then she won't be concerned about it.

ApuskiDusky · 30/01/2008 09:52

Yes, it was - leaving an upset child to cry.

It's not unfair of you - you are considering letting her care for your children, so you need to know.

Keep in mind that sometimes complaints are raised by bitter parents and contract disputes. I have heard quite a few instances when a parent doesn't want to pay so they phone Ofsted and raise bogus complaints. If Ofsted didn't uphold the complaint then there is no doubt a good reason for it. I would even phone Ofsted for details if you are very worried about it.

MaureenMLove · 30/01/2008 10:00

Well, since it wasn't upheld, it may have been a simple difference of opinion between cm and parent. I would definately ask, in fact, as a cm, I would expect someone to ask. You'll be able to tell from her initial response if she's worth considering!

ApuskiDusky · 30/01/2008 10:06

Thanks, that is what I'm hoping - that she'll expect me to ask. It does sound like the kind of complaint that could be down to a difference of opinion.

def ask, she may have had 3 children and one was crying but she couldnt help him/her until she had dealt with someone else...the child may have been having a tantrum and cm was letting him/her get on with it?, some nosy member of public may have stuck their nose in none of their business..or she may have been lax in caring..you dont know if you dont ask, i wouldnt be happy if i didnt ask and i wouldnt use her unless i was assured the complaint wasnt justified!

ASK! I reported a CM a while ago after I saw her hit a child. Ofsted paid her a visit and discovered she was also over-minding..Six under 5's. They told her to adhear to her quota of kiddies, and let her carry on minding.

I presume she denied hitting the child. It couldn't be proven and was her word against mine.

I was told by Ofsted I HAD to report it to SS. So I did. The lady at SS asked ME what would happen next!?!

It makes you wonder.
