I have seen an advert and had an e-mail from a lady who needs a cm for her 11 y/o son. he will need to be dropped off in the morning about 7.30/8am and then taken to school for 8.55 then collected at 3.30 and kept until 6.30. it doens't mention tea at all but we eat at 5.30ish so i guess we'd feed him too! i can do all this that's fine, his school is on the way home from dd's pre-school and she finishes at 3 so enough time too. it's only until july as he breaks up for summer hols (not sure what mums doing then but i don't really do holiday full time care anyway, dh is a teacher!)

my concern would be how to entertain him when i have a 10mth old, 16mth old and dd 3.5 as well. can't think it'd be much fun for him playing with playdoh! i know he won't tkae up any under 8 space and at the mo i have no other afterschooles. am waiting till dd starts in sept to advertise at her school so we can all walk home together. so do i take him on (after usual meetings etc) and what should charge!

I think you'd be surprised, that he might just want to join in. Otherwise books, colouring, lego, computer time and definitely any game systems you may have!

I just charge for the time they are with me for schoolies with an hour minimum in the a.m. but regular hourly fee as well

Hope this helps

that's what dh said - we have a ps2 so i'm sure he'd enjoy that! he might help in the kitchen if he likes cooking too! thought he might like time to do his homework maybe.

is it ok to charge for my return time aswell, ie till 9.15 for getting back home after dropping him off and from 3.15 for leaving to collect him. so it'd be 1.45 hrs in morn (if 7.30 drop off) and 3.15 hrs pm total for day 5 hours? does that sound normal?

The bonus side to this age group is that they're old enough to tell you what they like to do. The downside is that its usually playstation/nintendo etc. It can take some time to find more appropriate things to do.

Most popular activities are cards & board games. Some have liked to get involved in my planning - going through the craft books & choosing art attack type projects to do. Few like to read but I live in hope and ask what authors they like and pick books for their age-group at the library. I also subscribe to the kids newspaper First News, they look at that. Construction egmarshmallows & dried spaghetti, making their own comics etc. Football/cricket & going to parks. Sometimes we've gone to the park and I've let them meet their friends & play footie where I can see them right next to the fenced in slide area where I supervise the little ones.

Some expect to be allowed to play in street with their mates - I don't allow that, not covered by insurance as you're not technically providing care if you're not with them!

most of my after school children are between 8 and 11 (mostly boys) also have my own boys aged 10 and 11
they love:
the pc
drawing
playing out
play doh
building brinks (love comp's for best building etc)
sliding on my wooden floor on knees
eating
playing in tents

they dont like but have to do
4 pages of reading
homework

is he still in primary school? my 11 yr old is at high school now (summer birthday)

yes he's at a local primary school. have just spoken to his mum and as they hadn't found any childminders who had spaces they have made other arrnagements! only got message yest pm he is going to walk to school with a neighbour and her other son (15) is going to collect him and watch him till she gets home. she's taken my number in case it doesn't work out but, hey ho, thats life i suppose.

on the upside - i've just bought a new car! citroen synergie! so excited! sad old me!
