I'm currently looking for a nanny for my 1 year old son & trying to work out whether this is a good idea or not?

Does anyone have experience of this working well or badly? Any tips?

What happens when either child is ill etc?

Thanks

Every thread I’ve read about on this situation has been the op complaining that it’s not working, mainly due to the children not getting on, or the nanny’s child causing issues in the house. Also with the nanny prioritising their own children’s needs over the one they’re being paid to look after. I do know some people prefer them anyway as they’re generally cheaper due to them bringing their own child to work. But like you said, not only is the nanny going to be off when they are sick, they’ll also be off when their child is sick, and less likely to look after yours if yours are sick as they don’t want their own child catching it.

I had a nanny with her own child for 2 years, and there were different positives and negatives. On one hand, it was great for my DS to have a playmate (he was an only child at the time and there was only a couple of months between him and my nanny’s DD). I think it made a difference to what activities my nanny did with DS, she was great at getting out with the children and basically treated him like an extension of her family. And it was cheaper - we were able to negotiate down her salary by effectively treating it as a nanny share but with her own child. I never felt like she was looking after her child at the expense of not looking after mine. The downsides were that when her child was sick, she wasn’t able to come in which happened quite a lot. And there was less flexibility in terms of her wanting to do any evening babysitting etc because she had her DD with her.
