Ugh... Head Lice...

(says while burying her head!)

My 9yo DSD has lice and I cannot get rid of them!!! She comes to us every Weds and stays every weekend and I do her hair with the comb and conditioner EVERY time. Problem is her own mother isn't as commited to doing DSD's hair or making her wear it up for school, so I feel like I'm fighting a losing battle.

Anyone recommend a potion/lotion that works quick, eggs as well?

I'm itching just talking about it now! Sorry if you are too!

nitty gritty comb plus conditioner works for us, do it twice a week for 2 weeks to get all the eggs/newborn ones as well. but we check every few weeks anyhow cos they always get new ones at school.

You'll never get rid of the problem alone It will only clear if her own mum does her hair every night.

dd1 & dd2 had them at the beginning of summer hols, it took 4 weeks to get rid! I missed 1 egg or lice each time and i did their hairs every morn and night! In the end my mum found 1 live lice on each of them - so small i would never have found them - im so thankful she did. We've had them twice now in our house and i'd recommend full marks mousse. I found it easy to apply but tbh its the pain staking process of combing out the eggs that does the trick.

Our school has just recommended a new comb - Nitty Gritty Nitfree Comb - it's £10 from boots and asda. it has spiral teeth and is highly recommended

sorry, I disagree about the every day part, twice a week should be fine, ok you might miss a few but you get them the next time round before they are big enough to lay more eggs so it doesnt matter anyway. nitty gritty comb is great, gets all the little beggars, can even get it on prescription apparently

maximummummy · 25/01/2008 21:55

you can get nitty gritty combs on prescription from your GP

Morrisons sells a Tea Tree childens Head Lice Range. It is really good. There is a shampoo, conditioner and spray. Although it is a repellent I used the spray on head lice with a metal comb (can buy from lloyds chemist and Boots). I know it is a pain with girls hair as it is long but it is really good and cheap. Soak the hair with the spray product and comb and comb until nothing comes out on white kitchen roll. Repeat every 2 days for over a week to catch the eggs and use the shampoo and conditioner regually. It worked for my child. Give it a go.

Thanks guys. I need to get this sorted asap so Nitty Gritty comb mixed with Morrisons Tea Tree range it is!

And I'll have to have a firm word with her mother on Sunday too.

Good luck!

dd1 has had head lice twice. 1st time got rid of them v easily. 2nd time it took 4 weeks, like i said earlier. I disagree with you too morocco, every time i did dd hair i must have missed just 1. female lice lay their own eggs just 7 days after hatching so if you miss that 1 louse twice then it will lay eggs. at 7 days old they're still v small and easy to miss. I wouldn't have believed this though had dd not had them the second time - they were just so stubborn! Not anything like the 1st time she had them! I'll def get nitty gritty comb tho. I wash dc hair in tea tree shampoo now and so far problem has not recurred.
