Overnight babysitting rates, UK

Hey all,

was wondering if someone would be able to please help me out. I work in an educational setting and have been asked by a parent to babysit overnight. It would be over 24 hours, from about 9am on a Saturday morning - 11am Sunday.

as a parent, how would you expect the rates to be calculated? / if you have a babysitter/nanny who does this, how do they charge? My initial thought was my usual hourly rate from 7am - 7pm, then reduced/flat rate between 7pm-7am. But some people I’ve spoken to have said not to reduce over night?!

I’m so lost with it now.. I don’t want to undersell the service, but equally don’t want to suggest something that would be a huge surprise for them!

any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance 😊 x

I have just been sorting this out as I work 24 hr shifts. Anecdotally people have told me that they used to pay a reduced rate over night, but everyone (x4) I have spoken to directly has stated that they are in charge so should be paid the normal rate. Sorry.

You should be paid your full rate as the child might be up ill or upset in the night, so you will be up too.

I charge full rate until 11pm and then reduced rate overnight if undisturbed.

Full rate all through if it's a baby who wakes/one of the children is ill etc.

Ah thank you. How reduced do you charge after 11, if you don’t mind me asking? The children are 6 and 10 so I’m not expecting them to wake… but never know!

If they’re 6&10 I’d deffo reduce overnight tbh - if it’s a good gig for you you might want repeat bookings or recommendations to other couples. I would expect to pay full rates overnight for a baby but not any child over 2. It’s you that’s doing the work so what feels fair for you?

I am late to the party here but I have just been researching it myself. I am a registered childminder and charge £6.50 per child from 8am-6pm. Babysitting rate is £12 per hour for arrive, child in bed or going to bed soon. £13 per hour of acting as a nanny (although I think it should be £15 per hour) ie, picking up from school, preparing a meal, helping with homework, bath, bedtime story. I charge this until midnight then from midnight-7am I charge £3 per hour if undisturbed, full rate per hour disturbed ie if woken within 2am full rate, if disturbed again at 4am full rate.
