I am a nanny looking to go back to work after maternity leave with my daughter.
I previously worked in the Dulwich area and the nannies I know there found it easy to get work for at least £70nett per day. However, I am looking in Chislehurst,Bromley and Blackheath and am finding it really hard!
I'm qualified, experienced and an excellent nanny and have said I would drop to £60 per day for the right job but still no luck! I previously earnt £110nett per day so am taking a big pay cut even though the quality of my work will still be very high!
Does anyone know what the going rate is in these areas??
Also do any nannies know of any agencies that will take you on with you own child in these areas? Or any other advice at all??
Thanks!!

Hendey
Just wondering if you considered becoming a child minder? I don't mean to put your back up but I've always wondered why nannies with experience don't do this, as opposed to commuting with their own child.

I wouldn't entirely rule one out but I would also expect some sort of discount. Other parents might not agree with me, but from my point of view the nanny option is such an expensive childcare option, I wouldn't expect to have to accommodate another person's child and still pay full rates. To me it just doesn't seem realistic that some adjustments somewhere in the arrangement wouldn't have to be made.

I pay £90 gross for my current nanny now. I think £60-70 sounds realistic in my view. I'm just wondering if financially you wouldn't be better off as a childminder.

I had a the same problem as you Hendey. I decided to become a childminder instead. You work on your own terms and you get to spend time with your LO. It's fantastic if you have your own place but it can take a few weeks to get registered.
In SW London I charge £40 per day 8am-6pm and am allowed 3 children under 8 (not including my own). Two of which can be under 5.

At the moment I have two full time and an after schoolie so I'm getting a decent income at the moment. However it is touch and go whether you can fill all your vacancies - and they won't be filled all the time.

I absolutely love it because I am my own boss and I'm in my own house and spending time with my DS

There're pros and cons but that's the same with any job eh?

Good luck with the job hunt and maybe look into Childminding

That's £40 per child per day and I charge extra if the parents want me to work outside my normal hours of business

Sorry - we pay closer to £100 a day gross, it works out. £60 gross does sound A BIT low in my view. £70-80 reasonable.

If it helps I live in Blackheath and employ a nanny with her own child. We found her through Tinies so they might be worth a try if you haven't already spoken to them. we have quite a complicated hours arrangement but it's based on £7.37 net an hour.

I agree with harriet that i would not expect to pay as much for a nanny who brings her own child - it's not that the quality of care is different but there are a lot more constraints and things are different and not usually in a better way.

Thanks so much for all the info and advice!! Have spoken to agencies too and do feel much more confident that what I'm charging is fair!
Am also seriously considering childminding! My sister is a nanny with her own child and I think we could do really well and go into it together!
Any advice on this greatly appreciated!
Thanks again!
