I do emergency care quite a lot

For count/hospital, sometimes for SS

At least when they are with me they are safe

I also quite like the unexpected money

Encourage by all means, but sometimes an emergency is just that and better that you (registered with OFSTED, insured etc) are looking after them than someone else...

Ive done it a few times for court/ hospital appointments. Dont do it anymore as Im full with regular mindees, I didnt mind doing it but it was more stressful having a child id never met and who had never met me.
We talked on the phone quite a lot before they came and the parents would come a bit earlier so we could sort stuf out.
I done it cos the more people that know Im a childminder and might recommend me the better and they have genuinely had to go to court. Ive also had a child a couple of times because the mum had to go to hospital and didnt want anyone she knew knowing about it.

I was registered with the council for emergency childcare, but I started getting so many calls that I had to turn down, I stopped. I think like Katy said, from the parents pov, they need you in an emergency and probably haven't got time to decide who to choose! They know you are safe and registered and probably that's all that concerns them in their hour of need.

I have been asked to do emergency care in the past but was unsure re. how much paperwork needed to be done. Do you still need all forms and policies signed ?. Contract, Medical book, child record form, policies etc as the costs build up if you are only minding for a few hours as a one off.

KatyMac · 17/01/2008 12:16

NCMA do a short term contract which is much shorted - but you still need the child record form

rainbow71 · 17/01/2008 12:30

Thanks KatyMac I have used the short term contracts before but when I only charge £3 per hour using both forms when I'm possibly only doing 5 hours or less as a one off is quite expensive on the paperwork side (not including the cost of snacks etc included in the £3). I did wonder whether this is what everyone else does, does anyone else find emergency care is not cost effective. Even though obviously it's nice to help parents out in a bind.

Ineedaholiday · 17/01/2008 12:50

(whispers) I never used contracts for one off emerbency care, just used to write my own and print them off the computer with relevant details. Id keep a copy and give them a copy I didnt supply food or nappies either.

looneytune · 17/01/2008 13:53

Me neither, I type up contract amendments when hours change so just do something similar for one off care and get it signed but I do make sure I have signed child record forms and permission for car and whatever else relevant for that day
