Babysitting charged - new to this

Hi, we are in the South East and plan to ask our 15mo nursery workers tonight about babysitting. Some of them do it privately. What is the going rate these days? Of course it will be higher than asking a neighbours teenager daughter as they are qualified in this field. I also imagine it would depend on what they need to do, or no? Eg if they turn up and the baby is already in bed and they get a night in front of the sofa (fingers crossed) would they expect to be paid the same hourly rate versus taking him to a farm for the day? Very new to this! Thank you

I would assume at least NMW. Have you asked them
what they charge?

riotlady · 29/06/2022 15:57

Its been a little while since I worked in childcare but I would expect the same pay regardless of whether it’s evening with a baby in bed or daytime interacting with them- even if the baby is in bed, I’m not at home, I’m still working for you!

HSKAT · 29/06/2022 16:02

Pay would be the same regards of baby asleep or not, they are still keeping an eye on them.
I would think normal hourly pay and increase as to how late they are there

HSKAT · 29/06/2022 16:03

Regardless

Smarshian · 29/06/2022 16:10

We are NW and pay £10/hour for similar.

gigglinggirl · 29/06/2022 16:14

£10 ph if they are adults. I pay £7.50 ph to teenage children of friends and think this is quite standard. Most people I know pay double after midnight.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 29/06/2022 16:15

If they already do it privately, I'd imagine they could tell you what they charge.

NannyR · 29/06/2022 16:19

Taking him out to a farm/ looking after him during the day would be a nanny job rather than evening babysitting so £12-14 per hour. Easy evening babysitting with a sleeping child, maybe slightly less.

BiscoffSundae · 29/06/2022 16:20

Surely you just ask them?

Clymene · 29/06/2022 16:22

They'll tell you. Look on sitters.co.uk for the going rate in your area

I'm Midlands and charge £12.50 per hour.

I'm qualified, experienced and insured.

Cas112 · 29/06/2022 16:28

They will have a price they will give you if this is something they already do privately

TiddleyWink · 29/06/2022 16:35

I seem to recall ours charging £8/hour but that seems a bit low now. Anyway, they will tell you what they charge - just ask! I would ask round it up at the end of the evening. And have cash (see other thread…)

Absolutely. This is just as much 'work' as daytime CM is. And it is out of regular hours, when the worker could be otherwise relaxing. You have to check on the baby, settle it, tend to it if it is crying, not to mention any additional work if the child is ill/has wind etc and doesn't sleep well.

Whereismumhiding4 · 29/06/2022 16:36

I'm SE and before lockdown the going rate was £6 an hour here if a teenager (15-19 yo) and higher if it's a registered nursery nurse /childminder adult as they set their own rate. After midnight the rate jumps up and is a lift or paid taxi home.

fyn · 29/06/2022 16:41

We pay our daughters key worker £10 an hour, regardless of whether she is asleep and provide dinner as she usually comes straight from nursery. All the ladies at the nursery charge the same.

Seraphinesupport · 29/06/2022 16:44

£10 - £13 an hour

Classicblunder · 29/06/2022 16:51

Just ask them what they charge. It's £10/hr for us - if you look at stuff online, folk will say £15/hr in London but that's not what our babysitters have asked for. Our kids are an easy gig as they sleep well and early.

I don't provide food - personally I would hate that, I used to babysit and prefer to choose my own food - but obviously tea/coffee/etc.

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/06/2022 17:04

My rate is the same regardless what doing as it’s my time

anything from £10/12ph

Muppethotel · 29/06/2022 17:36

Thanks for your tips, very useful!
