Making nanny redundant

Both our DC will be in school FT in Sept and so we will no longer require a nanny during school hours. We have offered an after-school and holiday position to our current longtime nanny but she has declined, as it isn't enough hours for her, so now we need to start the process of making her formally redundant.

Any tips or an idiot's guide steps? Do we just issue a letter with date etc, and of course arrange for redundancy payment?

Did you agree a notice period when Nanny started, if so you have to give that amount of time as Notice. For example if it’s 1 month, then you need to give 1 months notice in writing. You can work out amount of redundancy pay using the online calculator, it’s tax free. Also you have to pay any unused holiday pay.

Your nanny payroll provider may have a procedure for you to follow.

If not, then

  1. Give a letter warning of redundancy.
  2. Have a chat about plans for September.
  3. Letter of redundancy with an end date.

ACAS has information:

www.acas.org.uk/manage-staff-redundancies/tell-employees

You only have one employee, so there is no one else to choose. You have already discussed the option of alternative hours.
So agree an end date and calculate outstanding holiday and redundancy pay (if they qualify for that).
Process the final payslip and produce the P45.
Provide a written reference for your nanny's portfolio and be available for verbal references.

Consider the timing, you want to enable your nanny to find another job but you don't want to be left without childcare.
