Hi Everyone,...
Just a couple of questions for my AP really, she 24 yr old czech/german girl has just been accepted onto language course at Portsmouth Uni starting Sept 2008. She is currently taking her NVQ2 in childcare learning and development, she is great with the kids, caring responsible, good feedback from Nursery where she is doing her work experience. Could she nanny whilst at Uni?
What other qualifications would she need?

you dont need any qualifictions to be a nanny.

I nannied while at uni... and qualified later.

In order to be an approved nanny (ie by ofseatd) you need to have a LEVEL 3 qualification... and first aid / crb / nanny insurance

Thanks for that NannyL

No reason why she couldn't - I am at uni and nanny part-time.

The CACHE ICP is a valid qualification for approval if she did want to become approved.

Good refs and experience count for more than a qualification, unles she wants to work in a nursery when she should be level 3. Getting a pead 1st aid certificate would up her chances, as would having a driving licence. As long as she is honest that shes not yet qualified, no reason not to be a nanny.

you only need to have level 2 to work in a nursary... if you want to be room leader type thing them you need level 3.

As more companies support the child care vouchers having a non qualified nanny is less appealing.... BUT there is a course you can do that i VERY quick and VERY easy that then lest you be an approved nanny

agree references and experiance matter a LOT more than a qualification

She's done the first aid, as part of her NVQ and she's a good driver. I think she could do it, after all I've got no worries about her looking after my boys, just a few little moans about living with her

Oh nannyL the nurseries Ive worked at only took level 3. Mind you only 2 nurseries, plus one that took level 2 or unqualified as assistants and level 3 as 'nannies' in charge.

A lot of nursEries will hire unqualified people and train them, it depends on the nursery.

Anyway - nannying is a private arrangement, so you decide which qualifications you are looking for, if any. There is no legal requirement if it's a contract between two people - same as any thing, you don't expect a cleaner to have an NVQ in cleaning!

However, registering for Ofsted (parents can claim vouchers, etc) is a good way to go as it can help financially. Plus, you know your nanny will have met basic requirements. You can find these on the Ofsted website and i believe Level 2 is fine - I am level 2 and I am registering, the lady I spoke to the other day said it was OK. She will need a separate First Aid Certificate though, preferably for Early Years / Paediatric, this can be got for free through your local council usually. There are lots of courses available for childcare students and workers (although they do tend to be sniffy about giving free places to privately employed nannies and might ask you to pay - so do it while she's still a student!).

Basically though, if she has the time, and you're happy, then there's nothing stopping you hiring her as a nanny.
