KIDS TV - Good or EVIL?

Both my kids LOVE kids tv. I am a little worried about how much they consume...

I didn't watch much tv as a kid, but the new kids tv shows seem well crafted for development.

Do you let your kids watch kids tv? Can it help development? Do songs help?

I don’t think kids watching tv is an issue at all. It’s about setting boundaries and time limits etc.

the issue for me with tv is parents who leave it on 24/7

no Tv when eating, no tv right bedtime bed etc.

I’m a nanny not a parent so I follow parents lead if it’s allowed or not. But I do limit tv and impair boundaries where often parents I work for don’t.

How old are your children OP?

dodobookends · 16/05/2022 18:22

I wouldn't let them watch the sort of stuff in your example, no.

Something like Fun Song Factory with Dave Benson Phillips, yes.

Do you mean in their childcare setting? (You've posted in this section)

I'm a childminder and we have very very limited TV. We listen to lots of music but not programmes like that.

I wouldn't let a young child watch computer-generated stuff on youtube.

It depends highly on what they are watching and how, watching the rubbish highly addictive videos on youtube that are labelled as educational or for kids on a small ipad screen alone then it's a no from me.
They are produced to be addictive, not educational, the more views they get the more money they make, so they are trying to get kids to watch them for hours everyday. However they are labelled as educational, with nursery rhymes, or with text at the bottom, numbers, colours etc to trick parents into thinking it's okay for them to watch.

Watching pip & posy, alphablocks, topsy & tim, andy's adventures on the tv, ideally sat with an adult to chat with about what's shown for 30 minutes a day, is how we do it and I think it's fine to relax on the sofa together for a bit each day.

I won't let any of my kids (who are under 6) watch any youtube and we don't have ipads. We also don't have any screen time for under 2's in this house, they should be playing playing playing :)

Oh and developmental wise, yes screens can teach children things BUT I'm sure we all know that they learn better and more when off the screen.
