Oh poo I really started something here

Where did I get the info for this way of making up bottles was it NCMA/OFSTED/Network or did I make it up myself? (sure I didn't)

Parents bring bottles with boiled cooled water
I heat to 70 degrees (yes I have a food probe to check the temp)
Then I add milk powder shake & cool

Dont know I ask parents for Sterilised empty bottles, and a tin of Formula and make them up as I need them.

KatyMac · 10/01/2008 20:53

I may do that but I remembered where I got my info - food hygiene course

I've always had bottles of boiled water and a dispensing pot which has three sections to add when needed like you said. The new Tommee Tippee bottles are great cos the dispensing thingies are inside the bottle. What's all this cr*p about? I think they've been really rude and patronising to you.

Surely it's up to the parents how they want it done anyway. Ignore them Katy, they're a bunch of neurotic (probably 1st time) mums.

maximummummy · 10/01/2008 21:12

oh my god that thread got a bit HEATED

or was it room TEMPERture ?

maximummummy · 10/01/2008 21:14

i'm finding a lot of threads are getting a bit out of hand lately and can get quite bitchy it's uncalled for

KatyMac · 10/01/2008 21:14

I didn't think it was that controversial - honest

I was sure that not heating previously made milk was better - but who knows

OP posts:
maximummummy · 10/01/2008 21:24

i think i'd ask parents to bring sterile empty bottles and make milk up as & when required - i have no recent knowledge of making up bottles as ds was purely breastfed and only from the breast no bottles involved - so the thread was interesting to me as i'd really like to get my hands on a baby mindee

PillockOfTheCommunity · 10/01/2008 21:28

I didn't think the thread was that heated tbh, they were just trying to point out that actually following the guidelines would be easier all round, rather than the half and half you're doing now

KatyMac · 10/01/2008 21:32

You try telling parents to do something they don't believe in & don't want to do - it has taken weeks of negotiation to stop them bringing made up milk

Katy - I sympathise. I had a very lengthy discussion with a baby's mum about bottles but they insisted in making them up and providing to me, I offered to have a tub of formula but they didn't see the point.

PillockOfTheCommunity · 10/01/2008 21:50

see, I'm a good parent, I do it how I'm told

maybe you should give them all a MN leaflet and get them on here, this lot'll soon sort them out!

PillockOfTheCommunity · 10/01/2008 21:51

I mean by my CM btw, stuff the regulations, we bf at home but I do what the regs say when I send ff to CM

AskABusyPerson · 11/01/2008 08:18

I've just read the guidelines from your other thread Katymac. Don't CMs come into the second area, i.e. where it says about what if it's not suitable to make up feeds fresh each time. It may be early in the morning and I didn't sleep well (I'm in late pregnancy!) but this section seemed to be saying that formula milk should be made fresh eg in morning, putting the powder in when water hot, quickly cooling it then storing at back of fridge. So parents could make up bottles at their house and bring to you to put in your temperature-checked fridge. You then warm before feeding. Presume this doesn't agree with what Ofsted told you about stopping parents bringing made up bottles! Or have I missed something vital?

malovitt · 11/01/2008 08:41

Askabusyperson - that's how I read it.

KatyMac · 11/01/2008 08:49

That's it - that's what we were doing but apparently we can't trust the parents to cool quickly & store properly so we should make up they way I described

I hate telling parents what to do

OP posts:
AskABusyPerson · 11/01/2008 17:44

So Ofsted prefer to put the burden on us making up the bottles with everything else we have to do instead of the parents preparing them which they do all the time for their little ones anyway just because Ofsted say we can't trust the parents to do it right????? Madness.

I've only had one baby mindee so far with bottles which yes I made up fresh each time in the sterlised bottles the parents provided but when I had the mindee he happened to be the only mindee for most of the time so I had time to do it!

KatyMac · 11/01/2008 19:48

Well apparently according to the research behind the gov guidelines what I am doing is fine & without problems - it is the 70 degrees that is the issue, as long as the water has been previously boiled (ie tap water at 70 degrees is no good)

OP posts:
SugarSpiceandAllThingsNice · 11/01/2008 20:10

So what are the rules on EBM? Are you allowed to have this provided?

KatyMac · 11/01/2008 20:12

Yep

OP posts:
SugarSpiceandAllThingsNice · 11/01/2008 20:14

Good, I presumed so but wondered. I mean, some parents could pretend it was BM, some lie about a lot worse! I'd be able to tell the difference but still....I just think it's all madness if parents insist they want to provide it made up like mine did.
