Nappy changes leading to bankrupcy

We have a new 2 week old.

She wouldn't finish her bottle and was losing weight so we decreased the amount and increased the feed times to 8.

This worked (hurrah!) but there is another issue. Basically she just poops and pees endlessly and it's causing me intense frustration. I'm looking for help.

The pattern goes like this.

  1. Check her nappy and change her
  2. Feed and burp
  3. Nappy check - usually a poo or at least a wee.
  4. Change nappy and swaddle
  5. Oh she pee'd again when we put the new nappy on.
  6. Change nappy and swaddle
  7. Oh she pooped again in the new nappy.
  8. Change nappy and swaddle.
  9. She is drifting off to sleep (little angel)
10. Oh no! Crying again, what's wrong? 11. Oh she peed again - new nappy.

Etc etc

I'm getting through between 4-5 nappies every feed! She feeds 8 times a day. This is unsustainable. I dunno what to do. I tried putting her on an absorbent matt and moving her around after every incident. It worked great but! BUT! She's not swaddled and so can't go to sleep.

I don't want to leave her in a dirty nappy (she cries anyway) but at the moment she literally seems to time her next bowel movement for the second we get a new nappy on. I'm at my wits end!

My first baby cried after weeing in his first few weeks, turned out he had a urinary tract infection. Ended up very sick and on intravenous antibiotics. Not trying to alarm you but just something to watch out for. He also had a cows milk protein allergy which was diagnosed much later but I'm sure played a part in his early feeding issues.

Pampers are TERRIBLE!

I always found they leaked moreso than supermarket alternatives. We used to love Aldi's or Lidl's. I was similar to you and changed them far more than I should have done but even I didn't used to just change on the blue line!

Change it hourly if you want ensure she's dry but any more is excessively excessive!

Cloth nappies! I bought 24 prefolds and 4 small wraps for dd1 when she was 8 weeks old, they did her and her sister, plus I bought 4 medium wraps and 4 large wraps obviously, but 24 nappies and 12 wraps, 2 kids though to potty training and I then sold them for more than I paid (4 years later )

I had one who was so, so fussy after every change and still has massive sensory issues now. Not breastfeeding and no CMPA as far as I knew but who knows what she may have been reacting to in my breast milk. She would feed around the clock, and wee and poo constantly. About 10-14 nappies a day and she barely slept either (because she'd wake if her bum was slightly wet).
I was absolutely shocked when my son slept through the night once with a full poo in his nappy, as I had only had fussy kids before that!

My dd used to cry every time she had a wee in disposable nappies, regardless of brand. We tried washable nappies and found she was much comfier in them. Gone from ~15 disposables a day to 7-10 reusables which get chucked in the washer overnight and pegged out first thing in the morning. Might be worth a try! Three months in and they’ve now paid for themselves compared to what I’d have spent on packs of disposables.

Sorry I meant I was breastfeeding so wasn't sure if any milk allergies

AngelaRayner4PM · 25/04/2022 11:18

I did see an improvement when we found the right nappies, we used the Aldi nappies and the ASDA wipes. A few years ago now, so not sure they are still that good bur definitely worth trying an alternative brand out. I have always found pampers to be e least comfortable and absorbant of all the brands

My DS pooed really frequently and that was due to cows milk allergy.

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/04/2022 17:09

Oh bless you

def no need to change after a wee

but the squirming - small feeds - how much are you giving. Remember they have a small tummy

8 feeds a day so every 3hrs perfectly normal for a bottle fed baby - I’m a maternity nurse

if you were trying to give more and feed less so say 6 times so 4hrs she is too little and again maybe why unsettled as hungry

and lots of poos makes me think she probably has cmpa

You need to see your doctor and ask for a cmpa milk - Neocate or sma alfamino

NoToLandfill · 25/04/2022 17:14

Hold her over a potty after feeding. She may just poo in it.

I would second @CoralPaperweight about lactose intolerance especially if the gp mentioned it as a possibility. There are lactase enzyme drops that can be added to the formula to break down the lactose in it.

Use the yellow metanium nappy rash ointment if you haven't already tried that yet. It's magic.

I was trying to remember the name of the yellow cream as it's a long time since mine were babies but I remember it being the only thing that worked. I also sometimes put a thin layer of vaseline over the top of it for a barrier so that it stayed on longer.

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/04/2022 20:21

metanium is fab for nappy rssh

only need a thin layer

and if stains so don’t wipe on Your clothes
