I have just received primary school offer-3rd place which is ok I guess but no after school club which has thrown me (up with youngest, happened to see e mail, now can’t sleep 🤦‍♀️). I don’t really know what would suit us best in terms of child care and would appreciate some advice.

-2 children, 2 and 4 currently both in nursery 2 days a week 7.30am to 6.30pm. I work 4 days and they go to grandparents the other 2.
-like the nursery and keen to keep youngest there until school.
-nursery and school are 2 miles apart-but no reason why I couldn’t continue to do one pick up-I have until now!
-Not sure what grandparents plans are-they are keen to do 2 school pic ups but not sure how practical this will be whilst caring for the youngest.
-I get back home at about 6.15. Husband later.
-School has a breakfast club-7.30. Could just about manage both drop offs once into swing of things.
-Large town (not London) if that makes a difference!

So I guess we need after school chid care bit only 2-3 days a week.

I’m not sure I could realistically do 2 pick ups and not be late for any of them…

An after school nanny feels like would be best option but it’s not many hours. Unsure if a childminder could help after 6pm (quick search on childcare.org suggests not but I don’t know how flexible these things are).

Any suggestions? And how on earth do you go about finding this?

If you can find a child minder who picks up from the primary school, ask if they would mind your child 1 or 2 days a week until 6.30?

Is childcare.co.U.K worth the money? Surprised to have to pay….

Child minder.

There will be afew who pick up from school.

Also, does your nursery do a school drop off and pick up?

It's free isn't it?

Childminder. We had no family support or flexible working so needed wraparound 3 days a week, 8 -5.30. Worked really well. I didn't work the other 2 days.

gogohm · 19/04/2022 20:23

I honestly think you are looking at a nanny, very hard to get childcare after 6pm - child minder is a possibility if you can find a flexible one but they might require both children to make it feasible

I’d go on the waiting list for the other two choices if school and keep fingers crossed!

Zooforhouse · 19/04/2022 22:36

underneaththeash I’ve had an e mail that seems to imply that this happens automatically. They are hugely oversubscribed though. I’m actually happy with the school IF I can sort the child care

Def childminder. There will be a few who collect from the school. Childcare.co.Uk is a great site.

Check your local council website for childcare, too. Most will have a list of childcare available and it won't cost you at all.

Keep looking at profiles you like, and like them. If they pay they eill message you if they can help...make sure you put year group school and days on your profile.

I’m an Ofsted Registered Nanny.
Nannies are the more expensive childcare - childminders and after school clubs will be cheaper.
Nannies usually work 10 to 12 hour days. So if you just want after school you will find it very difficult to find someone . If the nanny rate in your area is £13 to £14 an hour you need to pay a higher rate eg £15 to £16 hour for after school. I have even seen £20 an hour offered in my area.
The childcare site you mention - as a nanny I deliberately don’t pay for membership if parents can’t afford the fees of this site in all honesty they can’t afford a nanny.

Thankyou, hopefully sorted now
