Going Rate for Childminder or live out Nanny/Au Pair East Finchley

Happy New Year.

I am having a bit of a dilemma on whether I can afford to go back to work this summer.

What is the going rate for someone to look after 2 children aged 1 and 3 with the 3 year old attending a school nursery 2 1/2 hours each morning.

Ideally if I went back to work I would need someone at my home from 8:30am, take the 3 year old to school (5 min walk away) take care of 1 yr old, collect 3 yr old from school and take care of the 2 for the rest of the day until about 6:30.

What will this cost me if I had a chidminder? Live out nanny/au pair? I have looked at nurseries (where DS went when he was 8 months and I went back to work) but it is basically my entire wage for the 2.

Any thoughts on this would be great.

So you want childcare 8.30am to 6.30pm, Mon-Fri.

Nanny (salary varies, £6 to £12, depending on many factors). If £10 per hour (gross), then it's £100 per day plus Employers NI. Based on 2600 hours per year (thus 52 weeks), annual salary £26,000 - Employers NI is about £222 per month (around £2,664 per year), so if you budgeted for £29,000 you won't be far out.

Quick check of childminder advertised fees, taking the first 10 childminders in East Finchley area search who showed cost, taking their fees and dividing by 10, gave average of £5.95... so call that £6 per hour, per child. So comparison cost is £12 per hour, thus for 8.30-6.30 £120 per day. Based on 52 week year, that would be £600 per week, or put another way £31,200 per year. No employers NI, as childminders are self-employed.

If you could offer someone a Live-In position, then the hourly rate drops a bit.
Full Daycare Nursery I would expect is likely to be £60 per day, per child - is that about the level of fees you have been finding? So the same as a Childminder would cost.

Just looking at Live-In costs (using Gumtree ads), most ads don't give a salary, one that does has £390-£465 gross per week for a live-in nanny.

Another solution: find a nursery space for the youngest and get an au pair to help with the elder. Nursery place will be cheaper than a nanny and an au pair is fine to look after a three year old. Au pair plus (doing about 35 hours per week and living in) will be about £70 to £100 per week depending on your area etc. I've gone down this route as it's the most affordable option and my au pair is fab. I've got a six year old at school and a 20 month old at nursery. I sympathise, it's tough to make ends meet in London. Good luck xx

OMIGOD looks like I am either going to HAVE to stay at home or find a job that pays about £10k more a year to actually make any money.

Thanks for all the info ladies (I am assuming here)

I tell all my friends and colleagues to use Peekaboo aupairs for the most affordable childcare solution. Hope that helps
