one of my after schoolys who is off thsi week 'may' have c.pox..i told dad, that ordinarilly if it were me and dd id let her come but as i have other children here inc babies, id have to sepak to their parents..he understood and i said id ask..naturally, two of the parents of youngest were mortified and although they knew they had to get it didnt want them to catch it now as obv dont want to inflict illness on their LO's..i told dad id speakto them cos if i let his dd come and the other children are ill, i wouldnt be able to call a fee as id made them be in an infectious envorinment...so isa di id see what ofsted think of this?...do they think anything?..so what do you say normally(obv i wont let her come, but do i have back up from ncma ofsted etc?)..and also schools...do they have a set rule as she due back on monday??

The thing is if this lo has got CP he has been infectious for the last week or so anyway, so if he has been in contact with the other children there is a good chance they are inected anyway.
If he has chicken pox he will continue to be infectious until the spots have dried up. and I think most cM have a 10 day exclusion - is this in your policies?
My 3 dc have all had it and were poorly (spotty , itchy miserable etc) for at least a week and really wouldn't have been well enough to go to the CMs. However once the spots had dried up they were much better, just looked all scabby so would have been ok to go back if the cm allowed it.
Also a friend of mine her dd had encephalitis caused by the CP virus going to her brain. She is ok now though.
I think that the parents need to confirm whether it is definately CP or not. If not there is no need to stay away and if it is then you need to agree your policy as its highly probable that if they haven't got it they will at some time.

well she wasnt with me last week due to christmas hols, so clear there..i dont have a policy about time off for chicken pox, i just say i will ask other parents, i obv need to put something in now!, but told him it was something like 5 days after spots scabbed over???

Mine say 5 days from when the last spot has scabbed over. Its such a tricky one, because of the incubation period before hand. I have written that parents should advise me 'immediately' upon confirmation of CP and then a decision will be made jointly between parents & cm as to whether CP child will be accepted. However, if the child is ill with CP, then I will not care for him/her.

well the health something board ive just found on tinternet says "5 days from onset of rash"????

Really? That's pushing it, I would have thought. Although, DD came out in spots on Saturday morning and was back at school on Friday!

I think from the spreading aspect of childminding, it would be better to be safe and stick to 5 days after the last one.

welshdeb · 03/01/2008 20:39

I think its not clear cut as the number and severity of the spots vary between children, also spots can still be coming up for 3 or 4 days .
I have seen somewhere that they aren't infectious 5 days after the last spot erupted.
The watery fluid in the spots contain virus so it can be spread by scratching of the spots.

Also some children are less poorly with it than others. However I would say that for at least the first week they should be at home with mum.

There is also the risk of passing it onto other people by going out and about.

text last night asking if it was? and that i would confirm wether 5 days from first spot or five days from last scab, but not heard back?...cant risk other mindees getting it as thats not fair and ive spoken to mums, also dont even know if it IS c.pox yet??!!!

It took both of mine 7 days from the onset of the rash for all the spots to crust over. I have therefore now amended my policy from the 5 day recommendation to 7 days. I think my ds may have even been 8 or 9!

ToomanynewyearsROSElutions · 04/01/2008 14:55

yes i read its the actual virus INSIDE the spot thats contageous as well so untill its dried up, it can still be caught!..good point
