Live in nanny - buy own food?

For those with live in nannies:

  1. Does their salary typically include or exclude the cost of food?
  1. Do they expect to eat with the family (or same food as the family) or would they typically cook their own food and eat separately?
  1. Do you typically assign them specific cupboards / fridge space to keep food separate?
  1. If they cook separately, do you ask them to cook at specific times so the kitchen is free when needed by the employer?

Interested to hear how it typically works in practice!

Thanks in advance

No, I wouldnt exect a live in nanny to buy their own food, unless their accomodation was complely seperate with its own kitchen. I would, even then, expect to provide food when she is on duty

The most common way to do it is for the nanny to eat alongside the family. The family would add any specific items she asked for to the family shop. This doesn't necessarily mean the nanny would eat every meal with the family, but would certainly help herself from their cupboards and generally eat with the family.

If the nanny accommodation comes with a separate kitchen then a food budget would usually be given or a higher wage offered and the nanny can buy her own food.

But ultimately you can do it however works for you and your nanny. If the nanny and the family have very different diets, for example, and want to eat seperately that's fine too. But a live-in nanny wage will factor in food being provided so you will need to either buy the food, give the nanny a food budget or pay more so she can get her own food.
