What type of childcare would do this?

Hi, I've not used much childcare before, so looking for a bit of advice. In September I'll be starting a course and a few days a month I'll need to travel and be gone the whole day. My youngest will be 3, and ideally I'd like her to attend the preschool attached to the primary school my eldest attends (she's 5). Ideally a few days a month I need someone to collect 2yo from nursery, and then 5 yo from school, and look after them until 6.
Am I looking for a nanny, childminder, babysitter? I'm not sure where to start.

Some nurseries do after school care, after school club, or child minder.

The problem here is during holidays. Will you need a childminder to look after them then? If so, you kay be best to leave pre school aid use a childminder for the youngest. I wanted DD to go to preschool for the free hours (15 at that point and only in terms time - don't know if the 30 is the same?) but as CM had to keep the space free, I had to pay a 50% retainer when DD was at preschool to keep her place for when it was closed.

Try Koru kids, they have part-time nannies for £13.50 an hour, many will work flexibly as lots of them are students.

Look for a child minder in your area that does school and nursery picks ups. Or find a child minder that will do the nursery pick up and put the 5 year old in after school club if they finish at different times.

You need an after school nanny. As a pp said there are agencies like Koru Kids but I was not impressed with them. Try asking for recommendations on your local parents groups.

If your youngest will be 3 she will be entitled to funded hours.

Will it be the same day each week as that could be a sticking point

Does nursery and school finish at a similar time? Or is it a lunchtime collection you need?
And will the mornings work with dropping them off then traveling to where you need to be?

I have a childminder who can (usually) do ad hoc sessions (because we only need them when DH is away overnight), but with the ages, this might be harder. She wouldn't collect at lunchtime tho.

I used a childminder and school nursery for my first child. She did the pick ups, drop offs, wrap around and school holiday childcare.

For my second I switched to a full time nursery as the care was just as good but it was significantly cheaper and much less hassle.

Probably just need an ad hoc nanny/babysitter if it’s just occasional days.
I’d try looking for someone local on childcare.co.uk or advertising it as a babysit on Bubble. Or maybe Sitters.co.uk

Bubble & Sitters do some vetting themselves eg check qualifications & dbs checks. With childcare to need to do that yourself.

Thanks everyone, lots to think about

Would it be the same days each week? Most nurseries or childminders would want you to have the same days so they can then have other children on the other days.

If the days you need won’t be fixed I agree it will be an ad hoc babysitter or baby you need, unless you are lucky and find a childminder who doesn’t mind switching days.

GlumyGloomer · 28/01/2022 17:54

I'll know for the term which days I need, but no it won't be thesameevery week. Baby sitter might be the way to go.
